Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Winter Service – Operational Plan 2010/2011

This is a bit of a lengthy post – please bear with me!

Everyone will remember the chaos the snow caused on the Ladder last year. The draft Winter Service plan came to the Overview & Scrutiny Committee on Monday prior to it going to the Cabinet in a couple of weeks time. I thought it may be useful highlight a couple of things that relate to the Ladder. Please bear in mind that this is a draft plan and does need to be approved by Cabinet before it can be considered definite.

Many of our steep roads were in Priority 2 last year which caused most of the problems we encountered. This year the following roads have been moved to Priority 1 which effectively means that the Winter Service Operation should be not to allow snow to lay on the carriageway surface. When snow is forecast the Contract Manager should aim to start the gritting programme just prior to the forecast time for the snow to begin.

Ladder roads that will now be in Priority 1 are:

Allison Road, N8
Beresford Road, N8
Burgoyne Road, N4
Cavendish Road, N4
Duckett Road, N4
Endymion Road, N4
Frobisher Road, N8
Green Lanes, N4 & N8
Hewitt Road, N8
Mattison Road, N4
Seymour Road, N8
Umfreville Road, N4
Wightman Road, N4 & N8

Lack of grit bins was also an issue - additional grit bins are proposed at the following locations:-

Beresford Road, N8
Allison Road, N8
Effingham Road, N8
Pemberton Road, N4

The new grit bins should be in place by early November.

I have queried the absence of bins for Warham and Hewitt Roads. Officers response was that moving these two roads to Priority 1 will address the problems of last year.

I noted from the plan that Alroy Road was Priority 3 and I have asked officers to make sure that it is moved to Priority 1 to provide continuity on Wightman Road.

There is still time for suggestions and requests for possible adjustments before it goes to Cabinet but as I said before this document is only in draft at the moment.

Grit bin for Falkland Rd, near the passage please. Needed for foot traffic to school gates. Beresford & Allison are down for grit bins even though they have been upgraded to Priority 1. Is this grit from the bins for passage/paths or the roads?

Thanks for putting this info up Karen.
Karen, for those of us not in Harringay, but elsewhere in Haringey, where can i view a copy of teh proposed plan please? is tehre a link? Ta
As it is a draft document it probably won't be on the Haringey website but I have asked the council whether there is a link to it. I would suggest contacting your own local councillor who will have seen sight of it and will be able to tell what is happening in your local area.
Many thanks for these. It looks as though some notice has been taken of representations made by myself and others to the north of Hornsey High Street where previously we have had NO grit bins and no gritting at all. Hopefully we have no snow but if so it looks as though we will be better prepared and somewhat better served than in the past thanks to pressure from LibDem councillors such as Cllr Errol Reid and others.
Karen, I made a complaint about pack ice and requested additional grit bins for Burgoyne Road at the time of the last freeze so whilst I'm glad to see Burgoyne bumped up to a priority one road I'm also disappointed not to be getting grit bins as this in one of the widest and busiest roads on the ladder and could easily accommodate them. As the southernmost full-length 'downhill' ladder road (excepting Endymion) it does attract a great deal of rat-run traffic, it is also a busy pedestrian route between Harringay and Harringay Green Lanes Stations and the location of a health centre. If you could add it to your list of additional grit bin locations I, and I'm sure many others, would be most grateful.

Helen
Many thanks for this. There is a bit of conflicting information. Warham Rd is not on the Priority 1 list, but in relation to the lack of salt bins, officers say that moving it to Priority 1 will adress the problems of last year. Can you please clarify what the plan is?
Apologies - I missed Warham Road off the list in my original post! Warham Road will be moved to Priority 1 (whereas it was lower priority last year) which effectively means that the Winter Service Operation should be not to allow snow to lay on the carriageway surface. When snow is forecast the Contract Manager should aim to start the gritting programme just prior to the forecast time for the snow to begin.
It would be handy if Cavendish Road (Priority 1) was fixed from last year's damage. There are still some enormous potholes which will only get bigger with more snow.
Karen. Thanks for the pro-active response. I was about to try to see what happened to this.

Can you tell me though why Pemberton Road is not included on the Priority 1 list, given the main infant school entrances are both on Pemberton, and the Children’s Centre road is pretty much on the PR side of the Passageway?

I can tell you, I and neighbours watched 7 cars prang last year as they skated down the road in the space of 30 minutes. Hardly scientific, but indicative....
