Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Estate Agents Boards banned in Conservation areas in West London

LondonNet reports that Hammersmith & Fulham and Kensington & Chelsea applied and won permission from the government to bring in total bans on boards in 23 Conservation Areas, stretching from Olympia to Fulham.

While this kind of action by Haringey council may not help the Ladder side of Green Lanes as we are not a conservation area, such an action would be useful to St Ann's, Noel Park (and, of course, others) and prevent the kind of ugly bunching of signs such as can be currently seen on the corner of Warwick Gardens at the flats.

Just one niggling doubt though. If estate agents are prevented from 'boarding' in the areas with the red lines around them, would they then increase them in non-conservation areas?

I saw this item in the Standard last night. What a good example to set! Surely not many prospective purchasers are already living locally and wandering the streets looking for signs? These Boards are 90% about advertising the Estate Agent and 10% letting the public know that a property is for sale.

I bet they don't allow this in Venice!

Some of these eyesores overhang the footpath which I beleive may be breaking a bye-law.

I don't think boards will increase in non-conservation areas ... in the final analysis, it does depend on there being properties for sale. Estate Agents might be encouraged to market more imaginatively, especially on the Web.
The point in the article that caught my eye was that boards are now of limited use, as most people will search for property online. This seems a really valid point - yes, I know not everyone is online, but maybe time for the government to weigh up the social utility of boards as opposed to the impact on quality of environment...
Wot! Don't H&F and K&C have underfunded schools to support in their Conversation Areas? Like that poor little paupers' playschool where Lady Di used play at 'teaching assistant' before she met Big Ears.
When we were househunting (resulting in our current abode), we saw one house with an estate agent's board outside when we were out running and decided to knock on the door to ask about the house - it turned out that the house wasn't for sale, but the residents were just supporting the local school fete, which was sponsored by the agent. If we'd looked more closely, we would have seen that the board didn't actually say "for sale" on it, but it made me wonder whether the people living there had had any other unsolicited callers wanting to buy their house!
