Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Where are the Harringay Greens? Does HoL skew too old and right for them?

Rosie Latchford, Marc Jenner and Jo Kuper, where are you?

I thought that even by mistake you'd have stumbled across this site. The goal is wide open in Harringay ward. The incumbents are in the mud.

Tell us about yourselves.

As long as you've had a life outside of politics, you're not currently biding time working in David Lammy's office (we see you Olly), or backing a 'Greater Israel' project, you'll get some guaranteed votes here.

Excellent. Good luck, Marc. Time for a change.

I think some  voters will make their decision based on the activities of the national parties with less regard for the issues and policies that local councils actually will be able to control.  It’s an opportunity perhaps to ‘send a message’ but will that improve local services or change the things people are unhappy with about and can be changed here Haringey?  Four years is a long time to live with the consequences.   On that basis I’m planning to support the Lib Dem’s who have done what they can to challenge the current Labour Council while in opposition - better able to hit the ground running.

I too think most voters in the coming election will cast their ballot on the basis of national politics, not local. Most residents on the electoral roll do not

  • read HoL
  • attend hustings
  • know the candidates
  • follow council politics closely
  • recognise the names of their candidates

Most voters do not split their ballot and will vote on a straight Party ticket (i.e. all of Party A or all Party B). Most seem likely to pass a judgement on the performance of the present national government and particularly the current Prime Minister.

Kier Starmer has been described as having few principles, of wanting to be the PM, yet not being able to do the job.

His government's support for most of the Israeli government's actions has not always been applauded by his local representatives. Our local council leader did what she could to help her leader, by  suppressing the debate on Gaza sought by some of her Councillors, claiming "no mandate" to discuss international matters.

For his Party's local representatives—such the local leader—Kier Starmer current position is unhelpful as his Party goes into the local elections. The PM is in office but not in power: he is neither largely opposed nor is largely supported by his MPs. There have been months of U-turns.

The Dark Lord (AKA the Prince of Darkness)

The decision to appoint Peter Mandelson in the first place and to get the support of several others (including the King and the White House) and announce it—all before what was regarded by No.10 as the mere technicality of vetting—all of this is only the latest example of stunning and chronciallly poor judgement.

The Mandelson affair may rumble on for the rest of the month or even in the week up to the election. This cannot be helpful to his local Party, in power for five decades. Who have told residents they still have more to do.

The council leader has gone up in my estimation, albeit slightly and from a very low base.

Events in the Middle East are nothing to do with the local council. They have no power or influence over such things. They're elected to represent council tax payers and ensure that local services are delivered by council staff efficiently and effectively. If they're debating unrelated matters they are wasting time and public resources.

But, Clive is right about Starmer. The thing is that there is no-one palatable to the electorate who has factional backing who could replace him.

The only good thing about the Peter Scandalson affair is that it highlights the importance of the security vetting process.

THE Haringey Council majority group has been Labour for half a century. However, the periods of Labour government have not always been beneficial for Labour at local level.

As compared with previous elections, the result on May 7th will in my view be determined by the extent to which residents who normally support Labour, either sit on their hands or "lend" their vote to an alternative Party.

Again in my view, this will be much influenced by their impression of Kier Starmer's Government, absolutely including their international conduct.

(After May 7—and after the now surely inevitable leadership election—I will continue to respect Kier Starmer's strong support for Ukraine; made more difficult given the lunacy of his sometime-buddy, the mad king-across-the-pond. In this, he continues cross-Party support for Ukraine and not forgetting the strong and timely support by Boris Johnson. Only the Liberal Democrat Party leader seems able to describe Trump fully, honestly and accurately).
