Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Although John Miles from Haringey Water Squad reports some good news about council officers following up enforcement work on misconnections reported by Thames Water, he points out,

“Sadly, misconnections, though vitally important, may not be the crucial factor in making the Moselle an ecologically dead watercourse. Road run-off, other pollution sources, the lack of light and air from most of its length, the levels of silt and the declining flow will all be playing a part.”

Thanks for highlighting this, Liz. It's regrettable the Haringey Water Squad doesn't have the capacity to maintain a wider digital conversation on our own behalf. We've now learned that the Environment Agency are about to meet Thames Water and Haringey to restore cooperation over the management of misconnectioins requiring the Council's intervention. There were 219 unresolved cases that had been with Haringey for more than a year at January 1st 2024 so there is a long way to go. It would greatly help if the council gave much more publicity to the borough's dual sewage system (with foul and surface water running separately) and offered appropriate advice.

Am always happy to post updates on your work, John. After the Dirty Business scandal recently on Channel 4, it is to be hoped that the health of our rivers will start to concern us all.
