I am happy to report that renewing my passport was a swift and painless experience.
At 1.30pm on Tuesday 28th May I went into Snappy Snaps Crouch End where a compliant passport photo was taken on the spot and an official code number issued. Back at home I completed an online application using the code number (by which the passport office could find my photo) and paid the fee for standard service. I posted my old passport that same afternoon using ordinary first class mail.
On 31st May the passport office acknowledged receipt of the old passport.
On Saturday 1st June an e-mail said the application had been approved.
On Monday 3rd June an e-mail said the new passport had been printed.
Today, Tuesday 4th June the new passport arrived at noon by Tracked 24 delivery.
That's just under a week from first to last.
Perhaps, getting a first time passport might take longer but it seems that I needn't have worried about the possible delay in issuing a renewed passport.

Yep, same experience here Dick. Unbelievably fast and simple.
Here too, just renewed 2 passports and both back in just over a week. We took our own photographs, which were accepted.
Now we need to renew a driving license so hopefully that will be painless too.
