A few years back, we used regularly to pop into Taksim for a lunchtime snack. We fell out of the habit for some reason, and went back today for the first time in years. In the intervening period most of the other Turkish places have polished themselves up beyond all recognition.
So, today, I found myself really enjoying Taksim's decorative reminder of times gone-by. It has a sene of place that the others have lost. I enjoyed the food too - not world class, but just what the doctor ordered. We had a plate of cold starters, a gozleme and a couple of turkish coffees for just under £15.

Reminder of the place on Stokey Church Street, Clicia. Lots of hanging Turkish lamps that you could buy. Sadly gone, along with almost all the stokey restaurants, all turned into coffee/takeaway places.
Does anyone remember the Erenler - one of the first Ocakbasi on GL which somehow managed to go out of business just as the rest were taking off..? They had similar decor, as well as a doll's house above the bar, lit from within, which was rather atmospheric - I think it was kept over from the place's previous incarnation as a cafe.
I think Erenler was the one I remember being open most of the night, handy for after club munchies. At 3 in the morning you could find insomniacs drinking tea, friends playing games, teachers marking books, a really comfy place.
Oh, must go there. Talking of memory lane, there was a really good kebab place on Green Lanes that would serve you a beer but they always peeled the labels off the bottles!
