Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

The students who live in the house next door to me spent two days constructing a 20ft Mongolian yurt (tent) in their garden and now spend most evenings chanting and drumming (I kid you not) around a well-stoked wood burner.  This is clearly not just a temporary thing either, they've run electricity out to it, and even planted flowers in pots at the entrance!

I'd like to think I'm pretty easy going and "hippy-tolerant", but it does strike me as a bit of an imposition on one's neighbours, particularly as we we don't even have a real fence between our garden and theirs.  They're actually quite nice young people, considerably better than some of previous years' students, but it's only March and the thought of having a Cherokee style encampment all through the summer fills me with some trepidation to say the least.

Any thoughts/comments anyone.......?

Napalm is usually recommended on "Gardening World."
Hi Antoinette - I don't think the yurt is a problem - from your pics, looks no bigger than a garden shed. But the chanting and music I can see would be. Maybe a 'friendly word' with them to begin with; ask them to be considerate to their neighbours when they get together in the evenings. If you can't resolve it and the noise begins to become a nuisance, then I would give the noise abatement people a call. I'm sorry I don't have the number with me, but wouldn't be hard to find on the council's website.

Hope this helps - good luck!
Trust me - it takes up most of the width of their garden, and it's not remotely like any of the attractive garden constructions I saw at the Ideal Home exhibition yesterday! I have had a friendly word with some of the seven paying tenants & their associated girlfriends/boyfriends etc, and they always apologise and pipe down but the fact is that they live on "student time" (up at midday), whilst we live on toddler time (up before 6am, shattered by 10pm) and they seem to come alive just as we want to go to bed.
Can you get hold of the landlord? Failing that, if it's a regular occurance, then unfriendly fire is your only course of action. Maybe go out and say something to them in the evening if it goes on too late. Having been through something similiar years ago, I do sympathise. At one point I was ranting like a fishwife out the window at them at 3am. It only stopped when I threatened to call the police.
Anette, hope you don't mind, we slimmed down the size of your photos to save on storage capacity:

No, it's much better to see the pics like this..... so thank you.... Not very techie so wasn't sure how to do it like this.
A fence would help, no?

Easter is a good time to build a fence.
I don't think a fence would provide any sound insulation between them and our bedroom windows upstairs.... but if you've a hammer and the inclination, I've got a cheque and the number of a good timber merchant......
Quite apart from the fact that my 2 year old is a perfect angel (no, really, he is!) a 14" brick wall provides considerably more sound insulation that 3mm of canvas, and in any case would be hard-pushed to compete with the combined volume of 7 teenage students.

Anyway, what is clear is that somewhere along the lines, I have turned into that sad middle-aged neighbour shaking her wooden spoon at me when I was young and just wanted to have fun....!
I have a microphone and a 1000 watt PA rig if your toddlers want to borrow it. Postman Pat's usually up by 6 am.
Looks like you have a bunch of hippie students for neighbours. You could offer to set up a table and chairs at the border and sit down to discuss a compromise. You never know it could result in an invitation to partake in their nightly rituals which may through one activity or another result in a good nights sleep! Failing that as Exposed says a threat to call the police maybe help to quiet things down.

Of course you do still have to live next to these people so getting on would be better, especially as everyone moves out into their gardens for summer. Share a BBQ, let your toddlers roam around their yurt. Harringay seems to have a habit of offering up unexpected cultural offerings. :)
