Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I received a flyer about a petition to object to the "pub in the park", in Finsbury Park next to the athletics track and dog training area.  It was proposed in a fairly secluded site, away from most of the residences and close to dispersal areas such as the tube station and bus stops.  I think they considered this but the design and concept is weak and the "performance/ spoken word" element was very sketchy.  On examination of the planning application: HGY/2021/0992 it has been withdrawn so well done to the local petition however it made me think whether Haringey has long term policy to manage "pimping out the park".  The park is in a woeful state already with very dry soil.  Should a policy document include climate change (water retention tanks in the ground to collect rainwater, irrigation systems for the soft landscape, solar and other energy systems to power on site services and sell off grid for example), offer up sites at events to local businesses first, offer jobs to local people first, discounted tickets to local residents, a significant portion of the profits to go into local community grants, training and services.  The leaflet seems to imply that very little of the profits went to Haringey Council so what's the point other than having a big booze up which I am more that happy to do btw, particularly after such a rotten year.

Well as always I’m late to the game. Is this different to the food and alcohol stalls that are going to be set along the park in the evenings. I thought this was a great plan

as for a pub, I think it sounds possibly good, if it is well managed, and mostly an outside space to sit out with friends and enjoy a glass of wine, and maybe some food. There is a massive shortage of places like that, especially as many of us don’t want to venture inside pubs during this time.

there have been some sweeping generalisations on this post. Balmy

i mean yes pubs are closing all the time, but people want different things now, rather than sitting in a dark space, paying stupid prices, when they aren’t allowed to even smoke

but look at the brouhaha , they have done amazing things there. And yes the local Finsbury always looks great, but it’s packed outside and no room. So there is plenty of demand for outdoor spaces, And as Lauren says, there are lots of isolated people whom don’t have the privledge of living with any one through this pandemic. And any provision for more spaces outdoor would be great

but it would need to be properly managed. Shutting pubs has probably fuelled the alcohol crisis as more people buy cheap alcohol to go home with or sit in the park

Wow I didn’t expect this to fuel so much debate but it’s evident that Haringey Council needs to explore this further and what better place than with some of the people who have responded. Something really creative could become of this. I went to sink the pinks street party in Finsbury for 2 years in a row and it was fantastic, well run and arguably non intrusive to the neighbourhood and minimal intrusion to the soft landscape. There are creative companies out there who if given clear direction in the planning process could come up with something that pleases everyone. My original post was about the long term aims of the park as it’s clear that Haringey Council are intent on offering the park up to concert and entertainment companies. As consultees we could ensure that the long term protection of the park is managed properly, the biodiversity and the landscape is protected and that businesses are controlled from doing what they want and stretching them creatively to produce something which everyone can benefit from.

There could be an argument in favour of widely accessible short events - how I enjoyed those small scale Sumer Rites back in the day when they were free and there were no barriers to close you in! But privatising large swathes of the park for weeks on end effectivel subsidising private operators just should not be allowed.

And why then shouldn't the cafe at Manor House not be allowed to expand into the Park for summer but in planned way. And yes there could be a small band stand for music to be played to the area around the caf.

But continuosly privatising large swathes of what is public space is just not on.

For a council supposedly full of Socialist Momentum types to be engaging in this type of thing is rank hypocrisy. I thought it was "for the many and not for the few"!

Summer Rites was great, but who pays for the stages, etc.?  I guess Health & Safety and controlling numbers means that security is required.  Even back in the day Im sure that there were some idiots would would try to cause some trouble at Summer Rites.  There are just lots more things to consider now, crowds being one but Im completely out of my depth as Ive never put on events.  Maybe it could be subsided by the Council or Charities so that the tickets are pay what you can?  It would certainly have to be ticketed in the current climate. Is there already an active group engaged with Haringey Council to discuss events in the community/ Finsbury Park?  Perhaps there needs to be one?
