Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

My husband was accosted by a horrible woman offering her services on the corner of Ducketts Common and Frobisher this morning. I was walking along behind him and she was obviously asking any man walking past. Black hair, brownish complexion and the short skirt you'd expect. Saw her doing same outside Jam in the Jar earlier in the week mod morning.

Perhaps it would help if you explained what it was about the woman that you found horrible.

No. Most people like Priti Patel. She grew up in Tottenham above a corner shop and is now the most powerful woman in the UK.

Her record as Home Secretary gets high approval ratings in most of the press and among voters. She's tough on crime unlike your Labour Party.

Her record as Home Secretary helped the Conservatives to a record breaking election win last year. Or had you not noticed, young troll?

She's pouring millions more into the police service and hiring thousands more police officers, some of whom will be patrolling Green Lanes.

Ha Ha. No they don't and no she hasn't.

Since 2010 police numbers have been cut in England and Wales by a colossal 23,500. this includes cuts of 7,000 Police Community Support Officers; remember a time ten years ago when we regularly saw  our local police on our streets, they knew our area and its problems and could be called upon to get involved in local problems? The same goes for swinging cuts to NHS staff, the ambulance service, the fire service...

Patel and this government are having to put more money in now to restore a little of what they in the first place took away.

Ten upticks for that comment Maggie.

Bully's behaviour in this past week and her comments about lawyers who are trying to do their job whilst having their hands 'tied' behind their backs are repulsive. She should be implementing the "Lessons Learned" review of the Windrush scandal above all else. She is divisive & knows it.

As someone whose parents were given the chance to build new lives here I am 100% behind the repatriation of criminals who are not British citizens. We don't want them. I'm not a big fan of Boris but Patel is doing her job.

Agree with Devon.  My mother was an immigrant too.  Dirt poor at the start we made our way honestly and with decency.  I know of no other country in the world that would not return criminals from whence they came.

Thanks Geraldine. I'm sure someone will say that those being repatriated were somehow held back or given little alternative to lives of crime because they faced constant racism. That argument won't wash. My parents, particularly my father, experienced racism but they didn't wallow in it and just got on with life like most immigrants. In every group there will be some criminals.

Geraldine, you say " I know of no other country in the world that would not return criminals from whence they came" would it surprise you that some people are facing deportation who were born in the UK, went to school in the UK, served in the forces, served the UK in Afghanistan, and then face deportation to countries they have no knowledge of at all.

Devon, you say "...but Patel is doing her job". I only wish she was. London is the global capital of international money laundering and European organised crime. 90 billion pounds of criminal money goes through our country but the "hostile environment" is not about getting rid of  the gangsters, the oligarchs, the murderers, the money launderers; I wish that they would all be deported but this is not happening.

A recent case was that of a 21 year old who was living with his family and had been in the UK for years. At the age of 19 he drove a car without a licence at 100 mph. No one was hurt, and it was his first offence. He was sent to prison for 15 months. After serving 7 months he was released only to be re arrested and then deported. Is he a big criminal, is he a threat to our society? Patel is more interested in the headlines and being divisive than rounding up the real criminals in our society.

Maggie, you might want to look for an example that better supports your argument.

I have no sympathy for someone, presumably not a citizen, who drives at 100mph (first offence or first time caught?) and then reoffends. Deportation is ideal solution. 100mph is monumentally dangerous and shows a complete disregard for other people. The fact noone was hurt is irrelevant. Would you argue the same for a drug dealer who sells a batch that doesn't kill anyone? What about the next instance? Or the one after that?

Devon, please read again.

The person in question did not re-offend. He realised that he had done wrong and so accepted a severe punishment of imprisonment of 15 months for his first and only offence for 'dangerous driving'. He was then deported for that single offence of dangerous driving. I do not support anyone convicted of dangerous driving but realise that some young men make awful mistakes.

The point I was trying to make is that there are many people out there who are a serious threat to the UK, they are involved in major crime,  are well known, however they seem to operate with impunity and are able to come and go as they please. The Conservative governments policy of  "hostile environment" is not aimed at ridding us of major criminals however.

Devon, a prime example the kind of person who seems to be immune is Zamora Hajiyeva.  Her husband embezzled an estimated £2.2bn from the Bank of Azerbaijan and when he was jailed she was given an investor visa by the UK government in 2006 to live here despite the fact that her wealth was a result of his crime (she said the money was from him selling fridges).

Despite the government of Azerbaijan asking for her extradition she has not been deported and still lives in the U.K.

Maggie, apologies for misreading your post but I'm afraid it doesn't change my conclusion. If he was re-arrested it could only mean that he was not here legally and the Police simply missed that when he was originally arrested for speeding (you've said he hadn't reoffended).
