Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

This happened near to my daughter's flat - she heard the victim's screams - a 20 year old girl coming back from a night out - at 7 a.m this morning. Police have ticker-taped the area.

Hi everyone, as a local resident, like many others, I feel deeply concerned. It's true that these recent incidents are extremely unusual for this neighbourhood. We have a great community spirit here. Greatest help will be to strenghten our neigh. watch schemes and share intelligance with the police. The Chair of the local Safer Neigh. Panel (LSNP), Ian Sygrave, your local SNT and myself (as the relevant Cabinet Member and the chair of the Green Lanes Strategy Group) will be working on this together. I have already suggested the circulation of crime prevention info through local resident associations including Harringay Online as well as a delivery to every household in the area. Community Safety Team will arrange this. Ian and the SNT will look into distributing personal alarms to every woman who lives and works in the area. LSNP can also discuss to redefine priorities for the SNT and can ask for early morning patrols. I'll see whether I can secure some funds for self defence classes in the new year. I'll be liaising with the Inspector who is investigating the case. As soon as I have further info, I'll pass it on to you. I hope this is helpful. Have a good night. Nilgun Canver
Thanks for that - you have suggested some positive action and I think it is very much needed - I like the idea of early morning patrols - the test will come in a few weeks time when the heat dies down and we all start to forget/relax (if we're not careful). Hopefully the patrols(and local vigilance) will carry on until this guy(s) is caught!
Whilst the personal alarms are great when you have them to hand and are speechless, they're also a little 'I should be scared' reminder which I think is quite sad. As Nilgun has said, this has previously been a very safe area and hopefully this person is caught very soon.
I walk to Harringey Station (the Finsbury Park/Moorgate line) from Warham every weekday morning just after 7am and it would be easy for me to detour via any of the Ladder roads in between. If anyone is worried about doing that route alone I'd be happy to pair (or triple or more) up on the walk.
Neighbourhood Watch groups, residents associations and the liason work with the police all have a part - and a very large one - to play in stepping up our vigilance for attacks in the local area. But these other initiatives, already mentioned, have an equally important part to play.

The easiest way for well meaning residents to avoid doing anything ourselves is to pass the moral buck over to the Residents Assoc's, NWs etc. and assume that they will now deal with it. Job done. That would be the wrong direction to take. Lets remember that there are many people living in the area that might not necessarilly engage with these schemes for various reasons, people renting/transient movers, people new to the area, young people, people with little or no english and so i think every opportunity - like this forum should be utilised.

A couple of ideas/suggestions:

Alarms - Could we use our networks on HoL to contact the SNT to see if there would be scope for personal safety alarms to be distributed free of charge - or at cost - at designated venues on the ladder for a sdet period. This could then be advertised by leafleting ladder residents - id be happy to take a few streets. If not the SNT then maybe we could identify resoureces from a combination of agencies working in the borough???)

Visibility - rather than scaring local women with literature informing them there have been a number of attacks happening locally, could publicity be turned around and instead issue posters on the streets, onto lamp posts, railings, in local shop windows declaring that these streets are not safe for attackers, that residents are vigilant, aware and will repond to anti-social activities? ie. respond with strength not weakness, collectivise rather than individualise the problem.

Its great that theres plenty of interest and willingness to do something about this :-)
...scope for personal safety alarms to be distributed free of charge - or at cost ...

Dermot, the regular Harringay Safer Neighborhoods Team (HSNT) - Ward Panel meeting is on tonight. I'm a member of this panel. I'll bring this idea up at that meeting. Nilgun Canver has already mentioned here that this will be looked into and I have msged Jono on HOL regards supplying personal attack alarms. Of course as others have mentioned, including yourself, this is just one way of trying to deal with the threat.
definitely to reclaiming the passage! great idea Osbawn.

Thanks Matt, im sure you'll keep us updated
I like this suggestion. Great idea.
I think talking of scaring local women with factual info alto well meaning is a little patronizing isn't it? I prefer 2 b well informed so I can take appropriate action to stay safe. Women are already hypervigilant about their own safety precisely because the threat of rape is unfortunately an ever present reality. When their Is new info we prefer 2 know about it.
Really awful news. Lived in this area for twenty years on and off with never a real fear for my partner's safety.

I am rather disturbed to learn that the police haven't bothered to make inquiries at our address (we're in Pemberton Rd almost directly opposite the victim's house) after the last rape.

I think that the least the police should be doing is door-to-door of the immediate area and informing women to be alert to the obviously dangerous individual out there.
I think the assertive approach is an excellent idea Dermot - advertise that the community is not scared of this individual and that THEY are not safe!
I've just been forwarded the email below about this. You all may already have seen it.
