This happened near to my daughter's flat - she heard the victim's screams - a 20 year old girl coming back from a night out - at 7 a.m this morning. Police have ticker-taped the area.

This happened outside our front door.
So far I haven't been able to find out any more information about it but I'll say when i find out more.
Obviously my wife and I have been very shocked that this could happen just outside our flat
I think there needs to be publicity all along the ladder roads to warn women of the present danger , (if I didn't use HoL I wouldn't have known about this so I'm sure most women in the area will also be unaware), particularly at the moment when so many will be going out to Christmas parties and then New Year parties and coming back late. At least if you are aware of the situation it will give the opportunity to go home by taxi, carry an alarm or arrange for someone to keep an eye out.

Mmm, I thought about this, but wonder if it's as well to get some official statement first. What do folks think the sites role should be in this respect? With regard to timing, should we wait till we have an official statement?

I personally don't think there is any harm in making members aware and warning them to be vigilant and careful especially since there was a confirmed assault on Pemberton. Although we may not know the full details of the attack on Mattison we know a crime has definately been committed involving a young woman so I think people need to know and would want to. You could then send out the official statement.
Agree, as long as it's vague enough not to make details up and points out this is an unofficial statement. There's no harm in informing members that there has been an incident without being too specific.
Yes it was awful !!!
Poor lady she was screaming in the street, that she had been raped just before 7am yday.....her screams woke me. It happended oustide my house. Neighbours all came running out. A few of us saw a guy running off and have given a statement to the police. The police were on the scene within minutes ! It is very worrying and should make as many people aware as we can.
Jono - in cases like this would the police take any steps to warn the community about a specific danger?
Hugh I agree it would be a good idea to raise awareness of this amongst HOL members - surely everyone that logs on to the main page regularly but will be aware but there must be a number that don't.

Jono please could you let us know what the police intend on doing in the area to protect the community from another attack?
Also will you be releasing a description of the attacker, a statement on whether you think this is the same attacker as the Pemberton Road case or any other infomration?
