new bins have arrived
I can't seem to access the old discussion on this, so I'm posting to say my new smaller wheelie bin and recycling bin with lid both arrived last week while I was away. The wheelie is still quite tall, but fits more neatly into my front garden.
Also, can anyone tell me exactly what is meant by "plastic" for recycling - does it include lids of milk cartons etc,ready-meal containers, trays that you get supermarket meat in, biscuit-packet liners....I could go on. I've been chucking everything in there, but it sometimes requires a lot of washing up first.

I thought it meant the whole lot. Also plastic wrapping but this week my recycling box was not emptied so clearly I put something in that I shouldnt have done.
I need a new bin as someone nicked one of ours (me and my neighbour) so we have been sharing one and its not enough really.

The thing we've been not sure about is this instruction that you shouldn't recycle 'wrapping or film', but you can recycle plastic bags.
I'm not that clear what does and does not count as wrapping or film vs a plastic bag. Clearly it rules out the film that covers some precooked foods, but a lot of other wrapping doesn't seem that different to me from a plastic bag. Does anyone know?

THis is exactly the dilemma. I think I got it wrong putting in bags that contained apples, spinach etc. This recycling malarkey is a tad time consuming! I wish there just wasnt so much packaging in the first place.

Yes, or that supermarkets put their money where their mouth was and didn't use any packaging that couldn't be recycled ... It makes me fume when I see that little "sorry, not recycleable" logo - they shouldn't use it then.

Do you know what they actually do with the recyling cos they come along with their big dumper truck and pile everything in together including glass, so with all that lot all smashed in together with everything else they arent going to be able to use it for much i wouldnt think

All down to the wonders of technology, at least according to this article earlier this year in the Guardian.
"The solution, says Wakelin, is to "leave it to the machines", rather than have "Mr and Mrs Average sorting it all at home". His company's philosophy for waste is that "co-mingled" collections (where all dry recyclables are placed by householders into just one bag ready for collection) are the way forward, as opposed to kerbside collections (where householders are expected to separate their recycling at home for refuse workers working "kerbside" to then put these sorted materials by hand into separate containers on their vehicle) which, he says, are less efficient, both environmentally and economically."
