Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Sad to relate that there was a drive-by shooting on Sydney Road last night.

The victim was shot by the passage and then made his way towards Duckett's Common before collapsing on the street outside no.85.

One assumes it was related to the Turnpike Lane drugs trade.

We live on Sydney and it's still blocked off to traffic and apparently will be until 6 tonight. A resident who tended to the victim said he'd been shot in the leg, so he sounds like he's had an extremely lucky escape.

But it's safe to say we're pretty horrified it's happened in our street. It's bad enough to know there have been shootings near the high street, but this is something else. There has been blatant drug dealing going on at the Ducketts Common end of our road for a while now and this escalation makes us fearful for living here.

This is the consequence of the local police allowing drug dealing to go unchecked in that area for so long. An extremely profitable practice has not established itself and when there is such profit violence will follow. The police could easily cut it out. It wouldn’t take much. Arrest the people buying. Then you wouldn’t have anything like the demand and then their wouldn’t be the same motivation to supply.

I agree only in part (the 1st part to be more concrete.) Whilst I don't particularly relish the notion of having junkies around in broad daylight and trying not to step into Heroin-turds in the passage, I don't think arresting users is a particularly effective strategy. By definition there are more users than suppliers, so it would take an enormous effort on the part of the Police to enforce this. There is no legal framework that can be enforced to effectively punish those who have small amounts for personal consumption.

In some ways gang shootings can be a sign of increasing competition, meaning that times aren't as good as they should be so they are fighting for valuable turf. Apparently there's been a pretty major campaign against drug gangs just a few days ago (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-53263310) which may have disrupted the supply chains and could precipitate further violence.

That's an interesting article, thanks for sharing. A massive multi-agency operation like that is going to have far reaching effects. Good in the long term but as you say might cause further violent spikes.

As an aside, one of the officers at the cordon was being unnecessarily aggressive towards anyone trying to get in and out of the street on foot - apparently the entire street is an active crime scene because of forensics but they haven't done any door to door to actually tell us residents that. Then they're wondering why people are getting upset they can't leave in their cars to attend work/urgent appointments.

As mentioned before. There is so much profit in Drugs. The Dealers operate in groups with people taking money and then passing it on to theirs. and someone else delivers the Drugs. So when Police come come in. No one seen has cash or Drugs

But there are mobile dealers that are getting Caught with Drugs and Cash. Which does result in both being sized and a court date

I recently drove through Wood Green High road, in the early Hours and noticed Scooter riders getting something from the window of a Blacked out Window car. Noticed on way out and on return trip

Sure WG Cameras must have picked it up. If still operating in early Hours

Not aware of Any Country solving Drug problems

We heard the sound of what we thought could be gun shots coming from that direction last night, but as it wasn't soon followed by sirens or anything else we could hear, we optimistically hoped it may not have been shots but just something falling in the wind. Sad to hear that we were wrong.

It’s not heroin users I’m talking about, it’s the people who get off the tube by weed / coke and then get back on the tube. They know the supplies always there and it’s quick and easy.

You start stopping those people who know it’s an easy always there pick up and you reduce a huge amount of demand. Looking forward to the police and / or a councillor explaining what they are actually doing?

Police on Public Transport, are normally Transport Police. Not your normal Street Police

Another issue is with Drugs, is that it would need far more Stop and Search Orders. Which are not liked by some of Our Residents.

Accept buildings are using Knife Tunnels. But not aware of any that can detect drugs. I have seen TV programmes where the Police use Drug dogs around Stations. But understand that Dogs offend certain people. And as most dealers are Not white it again causes issues

^^ in reply to Bob, these were standard issue Police in standard issue Police car - there to support Transport Police

^^ In reply to DTW - I actually mentioned this to a police car full of police parked on the concourse outside Turnpike Lane station (top of Langham Rd) - their response was write to your MP so it gets kicked up to their Chief Inspector and they are forced to do something about - otherwise it's not a priority.  This was at least 2 years ago and already mentioned in another drug dealing thread.  Guess why they were there?  To catch fare dodgers.  This was at a time when there was blatant dealing outside the station every single day and evening - including empty dime bags all down the street

I tended to this young man in the street. He was indeed very lucky not to have been killed - he has literally dodged several bullets. I was appalled that anyone would be reckless enough to fire five or six shots down a narrow passageway in constant use by the general public which anyone could have entered from the Turnpike Lane end at any time. I don't think this shooting even made it into the media at all - London is desensitized to this kind of thing now.  Only a fatality cuts through briefly - someone with a bullet in the calf just isn't newsworthy enough.

But Haringey and Harringay police do try and combat it - to little publicity and fanfare. But however many get arrested there is a constant stream of willing recruits to take their place. You cannot arrest your way out of this.

PS The officers on the cordon whenever I passed into Wightman were very friendly - the other end must have had the grumpy one.

Christina I found you thanks! I was wondering who you were thank you for being so helpful - I was the one that made the tourniquet - sorry for my shouting and swearing the other than you the other two - particularly the one at his head were making it a lot harder!
