Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Are the independent businesses on West Green Road/Green Lanes the only places in the country who haven't heard about the plastics problem.....& tried to do something about it? It's not all the small businesses but many still automatically put single items in carrier bags, the number of plastic boxes from the take-aways must be huge & so many local restaurants & cafes are still putting plastic straws in all drinks. We've got huge buying power in this forum, we must be able to help influence this.

That’s brilliant Gary

Well done! Love it when a discussion turns into action!

most local shops do it  :(

The ones that trigger me, is the single bottle of milk (with the carry handle), which is then placed in its plastic bag, with nothing else

Crouch End have a plastic free group. Here's their newsletter attached as a pdf - maybe it could help with ideas for ways forward for plastic free Harringay?

Incidentally, I think YHalim are improving with those of us that refuse plastic, I don't find them particularly funny about it. In fact, they always ask now in the bakery before giving me a bag. Also they don't mind me filling up my basket with loose fruit and veg and then weighing it so that I can avoid plastic bags/trays etc. You can usually find quite a lot of products in glass there too. Not perfect but it's probably down to us shoppers to "train" the businesses rather than expect them to do it on their own. You can also ask the takeaways not to put cutlery etc in the bags and they're fine with it (well Hala are). Haven't persuaded them out of styrofoam boxes yet though unfortunately.
