Ultra Low Emissions Zone is Coming- Oct 2021
Just had an email from TFL about the introduction of an Ultra Low Emissions Zone (ULEZ). Initially it will cover the same area as the current Congestion Charge Zone, coming into force from April 2019.
The current plan is for the ULEZ to be expanded by October 2021 to cover everything bounded by the North and South Circular roads.
Broadly cars registered after 2005 will be of sufficiently high emissions standards as to be exempt form the charge, but some cars registered from 2000 are also exempt as they meet the required standard.
If your car does not meet the requisite standard the charges are quite high (£12.50 per day for a car).

2020 is not nearly soon enough given the pollution in London exceeding safe limits and leading to early deaths in London. We are crawling towards the end of life as we know it.

Well if you want to live in an artificially constrained city that has 1/6th of the UK population in it, you kind of have to expect these things.
Also London air is the cleanest it's ever been, no factories, foundries or docks any more.

The limits may have changed in legal framework terms, but that doesn't really have anything to do with actual pollution levels.

My concern is that we have some far bigger issues that need solving ahead of a bit of pollution that isn't actually as bad as it has been in the past. Homelessness, Education underfunding, Increasing poverty though the widingin wealth gap. These should be things that get solved first.

The Mayor of London can't really do much about any of those things as the funding cuts came from central government. He can do something about the air quality though. Is a one percent drop between 2005 and 2011 significant ? 7 years out of date and cars only. I suspect the foundries and docks disappeared long before 2006.
I wonder how many cars and commercial vehicles were on our roads in, say, 1958.

I saw this yesterday (Sunday) on the A406. My wife took a short clip. Watch beyond the first 5 seconds and you will see what we are up against. When you want to demonstrate a point the observer affect always seems to kick in, but immediately prior to this the rear of this vehicle was like a smoke screen.
Apparently 1 in 40 cars are responsible for over 50% of road traffic related pollution. My wife told me this as she was looking for somewhere to report this. Of course there is no one to report this kind of pollution to for cars...
