Dreadful state of Green Lanes this morning
If you walked down Green Lanes this morning, you may have been struck by the amount of rubbish and the fact that the waste wasn't collected.
Well, being nosey, when I spotted that there were guys with clipboards walking down and checking the rubbish, I went to ask them about the apocalyptic state of the road.
The waste collection was suspended this morning so that enforcement and waste management could do a check on the traders, what residents were doing and the state of the street cleaning.
By the looks of it, what they found was not pretty and they had copious notes about what they found. I mentioned the cigarette litter and it was one of the things that they had picked up on, especially around the unkempt tree bases. I also pointed out that the dog poo had yet again not been cleaned on Saturday.
Let's hope that they can start find solutions to these problems.

Let's hope so indeed! I normally avoid walking down green lanes whenever possible as it often looks like a complete dump - I cannot understand how people think it is ok to just leave whatever they like in the street?!
Businesses seem to make little or no effort to keep the areas around their stores tidy and it becomes a totally unpleasant place to be.

Any sign yet in Green Lanes of the promised metal tags on lampposts showing the permitted times of the timed bags collection for traders and flats above shops? I'm told that Hackney - having successfully piloted these tags - is now introducing them across the Borough.

Oooh yes, I meant to say ! In last weeks LCSP meeting, the representative from waste management showed us one of them.
There will be 76 put up (and I was assured that all the tatty cardboard signs will come down) the length of Green Lanes by the 1st July, according to my notes. Watch this space.

At long last. Though the credit should go to local resident Alex Segre who spotted one of the metal signs used by Hackney, and sent Haringey Waste Management a photo in June 2008. Recognising a good idea, they replied to him almost immediately saying they were going to do this in Haringey streets where there's a timed bag collection.
It's a commonsense scheme. Where there's no alternative to a pavement collection of bagged waste, there need to be strict time limits for people to put bags out. Otherwise - as in many Haringey streets - bags are left out at all hours and the street looks like a tip.
Information about the times should be crystal clear and easily available. So the metal tags are only part of the solution. It also follows that Haringey Enterprise need to keep their side of the deal and stick to the schedules.

Well at least the torrential rain earlier gave Green Lanes a thorough wash down. As I cycled home earlier there were rivers gushing out the ladder roads and running down the gutters. Barely a a soul in sight. It was all rather poetic. And very wet! Wish I'd had a camera.

Part of this issue with the timed collection is to make sure people do not get complacent and put their rubbish out at any time of day because they cannot be botherd to keep it in their shops. The Council need to make sure they do spot checks to enforce the collection process, and not be afraid of fining shops that do not comply.
One thing I saw the other day that is a bit of a shame, a veg shop owner was sweeping the footpath at the front of his shop. Hooray I thought. The guy has some pride/ community pride etc. Then he swept the veg and rubbish he has collected into the gutter. Boo!
