Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I saw from a Hackney Councillor that engine idling is illegal and he referenced this RAC page to back it up. Who knew? Perhaps our under employed CPZ wardens can add another string to their bows?

Yes it is. Saw a great poster in central London which could find multiple uses in our corner of the world.

https://idlingaction.london/ There's this - but, perhaps predictably, Haringey is not one of the 18 boroughs involved in trying to stop idling.

Apparently you can download posters and other resources here: https://idlingaction.london/posters-and-leaflet/ but my IT skills are not up to the task

The problem with the £20 fine is that offenders need to be asked to switch off their engine first, and can only be given a fine if they refuse to do so. Not really a disincentive.

I did recently say to a British Gas van driver that what he was doing was liable to get him 3 licence points (not sure if that is true). When he took no notice, I started videoing the van, which did cause him to turn the engine off. I'm not sure whether what I did was advisable, though!

Hi All

Car idling is one of my biggest gripes - particularly around schools I am endlessly asking parents who insist on parking outside of my sons to school to switch their engines off - I am normally on the receiving end of a fairly unpleasant response!

It amazes me that parents can not understand that their children are also breathing car fumes in!

We have been lobbying for a while now to ask Haringey to introduce clear no idling zones around schools - where possible making the streets around schools car free - this can be done easily using temporary bollards that don't affect residents living in the school street.

This has been implemented really successfully in many other London Boroughs and after a period of grumbling most parents adapt and park elsewhere or walk to school!

I would also love to see this rolled out more widely than our schools. Haringey like many other areas of London is very polluted and as I probably don't need to tell anyone here is not cycle friendly.

Whilst fining people works in the short term, we really need to educate people about the long term damage to the environment and to our health that car idling causes. I am always astounded that so many people I challenge seem unaware of this.

Schools in my mind always seem like a good place to start - if we educate children and their parents we may stand a better chance of changing the culture across the borough.

I would encourage you to lobby your school and the council to ask for no idling zones to be considered we are happy to support with this so do let me know if you would like any help.

very best wishes

Hmmmm and grrrrr.......  I have been quietly fuming (sorry!) for ages now over the Finsbury Park bus station where drivers run their engines whilst at the stop at the beginning of the route which is enclosed in shelters.  Passengers have to queue alongside buses in other lanes that pull in and run the obnoxious diesel fumes which are toxic.  I move from the place where I am in direct fume-line to the exhausts and then of course, I loose my place in the queue and have to go to the back where the episode is repeated if as often happens, the bus if full and I have to wait again.    Apparently the drivers have to keep the engine on in order that the ticket machine works .... so much for environmentally friendly buses then.  Surely these ticket machines could operate independently of the engine.  What to do about this then?
