Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Near Miss on Cycle Lane
Sitting on the 41 bus today, alighting passengers at the Wightman Rd stop were nearly hit by a bicycle on the shared ramp. The lady cyclist had to brake so hard she lost her balance and fell against the bus. Apologies were shared, but it shows how potentially dangerous the ramps are, only an idiot could design and allow such a dangerous flaw in a shared cycle lane/pedestrian area.

It does have a very clear "Give Way" marking on the cycle way - if she'd observed it maybe this wouldn't have happened?

How did this person not anticipate that a stationary bus at a stop would mean people might be getting off it? The infrastructure might be bad - the bus stop thing is a very common problem - but it doesn't excuse the apparent lack of attention being paid.

Do you mean this one? It’s always struck me a particularly pointless. It goes from nowhere to nowhere, does nothing to get cyclists more safely through the horrible junction and takes them between a parked up bus and passengers getting on and off.

The amount of money spent to get cyclists away from Wightman Rd an into Crouch End where they have to negotiate thigh killing hills is incredible. It goes back to your tale of powerful networks of residents I expect Michael.

From the photo it would appear that the large advertising sign would completely block a cyclist’s view of the bus shelter and anyone waiting there - why was this street furniture allowed? However, the top bus stop sign is visible and should be a reminder to anticipate people getting on and off.

Maybe the lady was riding slowly and overtaken by the bus while already on the ramp?
I agree this and the continuation under the bridge (which has become built up with muck and gravel and includes a crazy post in the middle of the lane where it turns left after the bridge) is a dreadfully designed bit of infrastructure. I never liked this junction before but now do my best to avoid it altogether.
Ps when I emailed Haringey cyclists about it they seemed uninterested in my criticisms - my impression was that they thought all cycling infrastructure good infrastructure..

I think I saw somewhere that Haringey Cyclists wanted to see a busstop bypass here.
