Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Well, John D rather "took his ball home", closing the previous thread after some racist comments were taken down.

But I think that thread highlighted to me that as a community we DO need to discuss this further. In particular, given some of the (frankly) ignorance displayed, I think we should discuss whether anything could be done to improve relations with the traveller community. For example I think it would do a lot to change perceptions if a local traveller (or perhaps somebody from a body that represents them) posted here about their community, explaining a bit about who they are, where they typically set up camp, the problems they face. Its amazing how much harder it is to be hostile to people once they have a face and a name.

Is that a good idea/bad idea? Am I being hopelessly naive? If its a good idea does anybody have any relevant contacts? Is there anything else we could do?

Conscious that there were some posters on the previous thread who seemed much more knowledgeable than me, so maybe they can help.

Bracing myself to be shot down in flames...

You're joking surely!  No one went anywhere near them.  You don't poke a snarling tiger in the eye.

Have you really any evidence to support your contention that the travelling community want to integrate?

I know a Traveller family who were next door neighbours a couple of years ago, then had to move out of London because the landlord wanted to turn the house into separate flats, but have recently come back to a different house nearby.

They have been the best of neighbours, talking to people and always disposing of rubbish properly. The kids have faced racism from other children but are well-behaved and considerate.

Forget who they are, it's what they do that matters. Some are nomadic and we should clearly tolerate and allow for that. Some have good homes in Ireland and choose to travel in the UK. But when they take over public spaces paid for by people who live there and used by them it is different. And remember, most of them will not pay normal taxes, they do not pay council tax, their children have to be schooled, usually in the locality at taxpayers expense. They consume materials and their waste has to be del with. Those who complain should be listened to UNLESS they are openly racist about it.
It is absolutely NOT about who they are but WHAT they do.

Friends Families and Travellers  should be able to provide you with relevant information re: the issues faced by all kinds of Travellers.

People are outraged when moped riders race around the park. People are outraged when there are crimes in the park involving knives and violence. It is unacceptable that rubbish collection has been reduced in the park because of Finsbury Park events. I don't understand why there is any defence of people breaking a gate, driving vehicles into a park at a danger to park users and then occupying an area of land that the friends group has worked so hard to create. They will leave rubbish like they did the last time for collection at the taxpayers expense. Quite frankly there is no defence. If there are no legal sites and a stringent CPZ in the area then go somewhere else.

There were legal sites, the travelers were council tenants paying rent, rates and water/ electricity etc, some of the travelers connections to Haringey go back generations with children going to local schools and to GPs etc however most of the sites in Haringey have been closed and promises to find new sites not fulfilled.

What if these legal tenants had lived as tenants in a block of flats and the flats had been demolished with promises to rehouse which never materialised, would you tell these tenants that they should go somewhere else?

I sympathise with park users however the answer is to replace the promised sites which when properly regulated work well.

I don't care about legal sites. You clearly don't sympathise with park users or residents who overlook the park. There was a continual movement of a people carrier and transit van yesterday between Willow Garden and Black Boy Lane gate. If my 2 year old gets run over will tell me the problem is not the vehicles but the lack of a road in the park? A crowd gathered for a party around a gas fired barbecue that filled the area with smoke. There was noise into the night.

I'm fed up with these excuses being made every time I question the safety of Chestnuts Park. My wife and I called the police to report the last stabbing incident. When we commented on this forum and said a good idea would be to lock the park after sundown I was told that parks are not the problem men are. This is yet another thread where ordinary residents interests are overlooked.

This is  not a legal site. This is a family friendly park that we as a community have to fight to keep nice. If people want to be so moralistic then why don't they buy a parking permit for a ladder road and have them stay there.

Whilst I truly do sympathise: "ordinary residents"? You mean white, middle class homeowners?

I see every race and colour in Chestnuts Park...they are all equally affected

In fact I would go further...white middle class homeowners are more likely to have their own/garden or outside space...it is the renters (of any race) in tiny accommodation that are affected the most

"every" - you're amazing.
