I'd really like to hear the other side of the story. This sounds a lot like the-lady-doth-protest-too-much.

I read this thread on June 26, followed the link to the Caterer article. I wanted to know more as both ward councillor and also as the Cabinet member with responsibility for licensing policy and also culture. I have learned, over many years that there are always two - and probably more-sides to every story. This is the case regarding the Street Feast business.

Promoting a festival as No License- No Lease did make me wonder what was going on. I asked the questions and the headline replies I have been told are the following:

  • Haringey has a grant from the GLA for £500k to fit out the building on this estate for various activities
  • Street Feast have invested £350k of their own money in this venture, but  their entry into this particular project possibly seems to have been over hasty and there are a number of outstanding issues related to various aspects of public regulation.

To put in context, the regulatory services have public and statutory duties to ensure businesses follow the rules ,and the rules are there for good reasons. Council officers cannot defend themselves from on-line criticism. If you think the Council is getting things wrong, then criticise me. I will listen and I am happy to respond. What I would ask you is not to jump to conclusions on this matter.

Cllr, Harringay ward

Mr Downey not happy with our council- "..the behaviour of Haringey EHO is the worst I’ve known in 21yrs of opening venues" - wonder what's happened here? (the tweet is here)

Why doesn’t the council try helping a little more, maybe your rules are different from other boroughs?Street Feast London could have set up anywhere, they chose Wood Green, they are an established brand, somewhere people will seek out to visit, you should be embracing this opportunity for change - not finding reasons to block it!

We're 'jumping to conclusions' as you say because here is something people welcome, enjoy, attend, and the council seems to be standing in the way of progress. We're jumping to conclusions because all your reply above is saying is 'the rules' (what rules?) and something unclear about the finances. Of course there's due process, but Wood Green needs more places like this if it is to become a better place to be live and visit.

This council is building a bad reputation for itself imo.

Looks like they've finally sorted out their licensing issues with Haringey - popped in for a look this morning, they've built the bar and are furiously stocking up. Birdseye view map attached showing entrance for those thinking of popping along this weekend

Great news. How’s it looking? Looking forward to checking it out this weekend

its like some people are happy for Wood Green to remain a sh*t hole other areas embrace investment and change its laughable

Yeah I agree. Not sure how many more Turkish kebabs i can stomach...

there are trampolines, pool tables big screens for the football

Maybe they're a bit peeved no one goes to their Blue what's-it-called place on Station Rd ...

Blue House Yard is great. I love the Harmless shop and the Sunday vegan market
