Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Good friend to Harringay Online and hard working councillor, Alan Stanton, is being made to pay for his open and principled stand against the financial mismanagement in the council. He is now being threatened by Labour Group chief whip, Harry Lister, with disciplinary action for writing the truth on his blog

My thanks for the support from HoL members for the stand I've taken; for comments on my Flickr photoblog; and emails I've received.

I will be replying more fully and adding new material. However, not this evening and probably not for a few days. Like very many people, my thoughts are dominated by the sickening news on TV about the criminal case which finished today.

The sickening news of M.P. expenses ?
Just to let people know that Cllr Harry Lister, Haringey Labour Chief Whip has called a Special Labour Group Meeting this coming Tuesday 12 May at 7.pm. I've posted his letter on my Flickr pages here and my reply below it.

At the time of posting - Saturday evening 9 May - he still hasn't sent me the report. Nor given me specific details of what I've done that he objects to.
THE PROCESS in this case says more about the accusers than the accused (and who guards the guardians?).

If the charge is asking searching questions of "Comrade" Cllr. Adje, who has cost our Borough many millions of pounds, due to his poor judgement, his recklessness & financial incompetence – I put it no more strongly than that – then that is something that the Group should have done for themselves, well before the problem festered for so long that at least one principled member had to speak out.

Comrade crony Councillor, Chief Inquisitor Lister, the former cabinet member for casino regeneration, ought to be facing questions himself.

The real purpose of the proceedings is not to silence Cllr. Alan Stanton, because that isn't likely to happen, but to make an example of him in order to intimidate others, lest anyone else speaks out. It's part of the council's cover-up culture.

I hope that some of Alan's colleagues might support him in the Star Chamber.

I for one look forward to reading the next part (nine?) in Cllr. Stanton's Flickr blog that includes issues raised about Cllr. Adje.

Another update. I've now posted Cllr Lister's latest email, with my reply, here on Flickr.

You'll see that despite my asking several times, I still haven't had Cllr Lister's list of my nine Flickr pages he objects to. Perhaps it's just photos taken in daylight and fresh air he finds so scary.

He insists that I won't "get sight of the report" until 7 pm this evening. I'm assuming that Labour councillors - the vast majority of whom are a decent hardworking bunch of people - will recognise this is a flagrant breach of the principles of Natural Justice.
So alan, i hope you are prepared for the showdown at 'high seven' tonight. Perhaps you can gain inspiration from this clip:

Update I got a phonecall an hour ago. Tonight's 7 pm meeting has been cancelled. Thanks again for HoL members' supportive comments and to James for the hilarious High Noon spoof.

Did someone just blink?!

Kangaroo Court, noun:

"A kangaroo court or kangaroo trial, sometimes likened to a drumhead court-martial, refers to a sham legal proceeding or court. The colloquial phrase "kangaroo court" is used to describe judicial proceedings that, the speaker feels, deny due process rights in the name of expediency. Such rights include

the right to summon witnesses,
the right of cross-examination,
the right not to incriminate oneself,
the right not to be tried on secret evidence,
the right to control one's own defense,
the right to exclude evidence that is improperly obtained, irrelevant or inherently inadmissible, e.g., hearsay,
the right to exclude judges or jurors on the grounds of partiality or conflict of interest, and
the right of appeal.

The outcome of a trial by "kangaroo court" is essentially determined in advance, usually for the purpose of providing a conviction, either by going through the motions of manipulated procedure or by allowing no defense at all.
