What's so Secret about what can go in the Grey Bin?
I've just caved in and ordered a small brown bin for "green garden waste'. Haringey's 'What Can You Recycle' page makes it pretty cleat what can and cant go in the bin.
It seems much harder/impossible to find out what can and can't go in the grey bin. Haringey's website doesn't say. So, as I ordered the brown bin on the phone (you can only order a big bin online, not a small one) I asked the Veolia rep if it was forbidden to put any excess garden waste in the grey bin. He was a bit coy and mumbled, "Yeah, that's what we've been told, yeah" - not yes or no, but a response that I took to be somewhat distancing him from what he was saying.
When I requested it, he agreed to send me a leaflet giving the lowdown on what goes in which bin. But, when I checked specially whether instructions on the grey bin are included, he said that that the leaflet doesn't spill the beans about the grey bin (probably because the beans should go in the food waste bin!).
Despite not wanting another bloody wheelie bin in the front garden, I've done what I was told and ordered a brown bin. Now I'd like to be sure about what I do with my garden rubbish. Can the items excluded from the brown bin go in the grey one? Can I put brown bin overflow in the grey bin?
So I'm left with a similar question at two levels
1. From a practical perspective, what will they currently collect from the grey bin without leaving it uncollected?
2. From a 'now-you've got-me-wondering' point of view, what are they legally/contractually allowed to exclude form the grey bin?

Hi Hugh, by grey bin, do you mean black bin for general waste? Haven't seen any grey bins...

The leaflet we get once a year about waste collection times/days details pretty specifically what you can/cant' put in the black bin. I remember specifically you can't put rubble in it for example. So such information does exist (I'll see if I can find the leaflet).
Can't remember whether branches/garden waste were specified, but given that I have no desire to pay £75 for a green bin that I need 2 weeks a year and that will certainly get contaminated by passers by throwing away their beer cans etc, and I have no car to take garden waste to the dump in, I intend to put my garden waste in a normal black bin.
I'd like to be more environmentally friendly but Haringey aren't making it easy for me.

I thought I'd seen something like that in the past, but there's absolutely zip on the Haringey website right now.
Just before I wrote this post I sent off an email to enquries@veolia, and, credit where credit is due, I've had a reply already with the answer I need for part 1:
No, please do not put any garden waste into the Refuse bin. For the items that can't be included, i'm afraid you will have to find your own means of disposing these.
If your Garden bin is full, it's best to either wait for your next collection day or take your waste at Haringey's Reuse and Recycling Centre in Wood Green (free of charge)

Here's what arrived in the post this morning from Veolia. Are we any the wiser? There does seem to be a coyness. The pages on food, garden and dry recycling are quiet explicit.

Aha! It says 'black bin'. I had no idea it was emptied fortnightly, I could have sworn it was weekly.
I found my old flyer (from 2014/15) which is as vague as the above. I could have sworn the most recent flyer was more detailed, I definitely read 'no rubble' somewhere!

Hugh, make sure Veolia have updated your records. I bought the small brown bin for £55 Quid. Veolia took the money but didn't tell the Operation Team so I missed 4 collections. obviously didn't get a refund for each missed week...

Does anyone else remember when Haringey put skips/commercial bins in various places on the Ladder for a short period so that we could dispose of large garden waste etc?
I have a large garden, no car and limited income and the issue of garden waste is a problem for me. All the items which go in the brown bin go in my compost heap, so all I need is a solution for the rest.

There used to be a Community Clear Out day once or twice a year as I recall. As well as it being a fantastic way to get rid of stuff without fly tipping it was great to have a rummage and reuse things others didn’t want. Love to have it back.

Trying to get rid of stuff with no car is a real hassle. I've been holding on to things like cardboard and polystyrene in the hope that I'll occasionally be able to squeeze stuff into my bin on the night before collection.
Cardboard is just about doable (after spending hours chopping it up so it will fit in the bin) but things which can't be recycled are really tough to get rid of with a fortnightly bin collection. There's not even the option of paying the council to collect it.
