Hi all,
Does anyone have an informed view on how competent our Council are at their "basic" responsibilities, compared to Councils in similar parts of London. Thinking of collecting bins, keeping the streets serviceable etc etc.
I've lived in Haringey for a while and was young enough not to really care or notice when I lived elsewhere in London before that, so I don't have a sense of how they perform compared to other Boroughs.
Am trying to find a reason not to abstain in May :)

For the record, Osbawn, Cllr Claire Kober was once again selected as one of their three Labour candidates by a majority of the Seven Sisters ward members who attended.
She later decided not to take up their very kind offer.
I've not a clue, Osbawn.
Neighbours may seem the best comparators but they aren’t always.
Camden has pockets of the highest individual wealth in the world (not just the U.K.) and some of the worst deprivation. Similarly in Hackney where £Xm houses sit next to deprived estates. I’d also be cautious about personal feelings.
When I worked in the sector I’d often meet up with people who did similar jobs to mine in other boroughs or cities. Without exception there was a feeling amongst some of residents that the borough they lived in didn’t perform as well as a neighbour. I carried out benchmarking interviews with residents in Haringey, Westminster, Kensington and Chelsea, Lambeth, Islington and Camden and the phrase I heard again and again was that they lived “In the worst run borough in London”. Often this perception was down to a single instance of poor service which wiped out all the other positive things they had experienced.
For instance, I try to hold in my head that Haringey is one of a few local aithorities in the whole of England that hasn’t shut down libraries to save money but that gets clouded by the last time my bins were left on the pavement rather than being put back in my front garden!
In all honesty I don’t think Haringey performs any worse or better than most other London authorities.
Many thanks for your advice Michael and all, much appreciated!
Hustings meetings are on tonight at the Green Rooms in Wood Green, and Friday at Park View School at West Green (junction with Philip Lane).
I've lived in many other areas. I do feel there is considerable complacency in North London. In the form of an Ideologically driven party voted by ideologically driven residents (and please correct me if I'm wrong). The differences in services across boroughs are huge. Here the council is too important to consider their local issues but rather chase for "equality" and "rights". What about striving for responsibility and accountability instead of creating a culture of entitlement. I'm fighting for change on my side but get presented the victim card the moment councillors are put in a corner. Central funding has been cut for all boroughs, yet others are doing a better job. Change is good. This applies everywhere
I lived in Camden borough previously. I only use the basic council services but would say mostly there is no difference. The one thing that is worse here is regularity of street cleaning but then I was in Camden before the squeeze on council budgets so who knows they might have the same once a week sweeps that we get in the Ladder now too. In terms of dealing with the council, I find it the same frustratingly slow and ineffective bureaucratic experience here as any other council or public sector office I have the misfortunate to need to contact (except HMRC - they're wonderfully efficient when I owe them money )
Sorry about taking so long to reply to this. I've now done so, but taken the liberty of putting it on a separate posting, so as to make it easier for people to comment on it directly. I have of course been going about the ward all the time, and much of this reflects my own observations. http://www.harringayonline.com/forum/topics/haringey-council-servic...
