Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Walking out of the house yesterday morning I heard the faint sounds of a moggie in distress.  It was intermittent and got louder and louder until I realised that it was coming from a car driving up the street.  Every time the driver changed gear (or what ever you do going up a hill) the car let out a very authentic and very amplified cat yowl.  This is obviously something you add to your car (like those very loud exhaust roars you get on Green Lanes).  Anyone have any idea why any car owner would do this and that it’s supposed to signify? Ta.

This is a QI-type question with penalty points for the easy but wrong answer, right?

Genuine question Hugh.  Why would someone go to the expense of modifying their vehicle so they come over as an utter prat?  Or am I missing something?

No Nick, not getting it. Isn’t a bit embarrassing?  I thought maybe it was originally meant to sound like a lion roaring but the battery had run down.

It must be for the same reason you see adult men dressed as toddlers in those baggy babygrow suits with other people’s names emblazoned across them. I can’t fathom why anyone would want to look so ridiculous but apparently they think it makes them look hard and gives them a sense of belonging. Each to their own eh.

Umm Michael, I wonder was it an older car?

They could develop the 'slipping-fan-belt-whine' sound that you get when the engine speed changes on a poorly maintained car, not too far off the sound of a screeching cat.

And yes I too deplore the extremely aggressive exhaust sounds from 'eff-off' cars on Green Lanes.

It was a definite recording of cat.  Full meow/growl noise.

OK.     Just.     Weird.....

The catalytic converter ( CAT ) is worn out and should be replaced.

Well somebody had to say it

Prolly a car with a turbo supercharger. Some of them can sound a little odd when they kick in; https://youtu.be/sHC5pINsLyc

Think you might of hit it Matt.  Kind of like putting those clacker things on the spokes of your Chopper bike but louder?

Was it a Vauxhall Tigra?

Or a Jaguar.
