I used Neil Protheroe after seeing the other posts on here.
He came round quickly within a couple of days, gave a reasonable quote for a few bits and pieces such as replacing faulty valves. Communication was fine, on the phone and via Whatsapp, which worked well for me.
Turned up at the agreed time and did the work quickly for the agreed price, therefore I'm happy to recommend him.
His number is 07731 997 936

Anyone posting on Neil should consider making a donation to their favourite charity...
I assume he must offer some sort of discount if you big him up online, I can't really think of any other explanation why he receives so many positive posts (I'm not disputing whether or not he is good, but other tradesmen don't seem to receive so many posts and a large number of those who start a thread recommending him only have a handful of posts).
Hi Andrew, We know no more about the Neil than anyone. Since posts about him seem to be becoming increasingly a bone of contention, we'll see if we can find out if there's anything behind the reviews.
What I can say at this point is that I know personally two of the people who've either started a thread about him or commented on another's thread. I can say with certainty that both of those profiles are genuine and can add with a fair degree of confidence that I doubt that either of them would have taken any form of improper inducement to post.
I will add an update about anything else we're able to learn.
Where we find any reviews that are not genuine in any way we will, and do, remove them. However I'm pleased to say that the instances of those are few and far between.
I wish - a review wasn't even mentioned when I first used him. I recommended him off my own bat because he did a good job that was reasonably priced and was easy to get on with.
Marek gets a lot of recommendations too though I doubt he's giving his clients a bung either.
And that Dave - he never gives me a free pint however much I sing the praises of The Salisbury.
In this social age, reviews (good or bad) and recommendations seem a much better way for people to find a tradesperson than banner ads which by their very nature are only going to paint a positive picture.
Hugh - do you have guidelines for when a recommendation or endorsement becomes something more that the tradesperson should really be paying HOL for?
Hi Adam, We haven't as yet been given any reason to have guidelines on solicited reviews at this point, but we do review and amend our rules regularly and keep an eye out for any improper behaviour.
With regards to banner adverts and recommendations, both seem generally to work very well on HoL. Both do slightly different jobs and work best if a person has both!
True. But I haven't seen any posts complaining about Marek, only positive ones. Whereas....
So if a tradesperson gets a bad review what in your view should happen next?
Should people be forbidden from posting positive reviews after that?
Or if they do are you suggesting that they must have been coerced or bribed into doing it?
Surely it's best to post the good and the bad as per an individual's personal experience. Then the community can make up their own minds.
The other alternative is to not allow any reviews and then we're back to the days of taking a punt on a name in the yellow pages.
Adam : I'm not saying that people shouldn't post reviews, either positive or negative. The important thing is, do we trust them ? I have my own opinions but I also do my own plumbing .
There are two types of trust involved, John.
Firstly as we read any review anywhere we need to decide if we believe that it's a review by someone who has genuinely experienced the service being reviewed and that they are expressing their genuine thoughts/sentiments. We might call this the trustworthiness of the review
Secondly we need to assess the quality of the judgements expressed in the reviews, in other words whether people have made considered judgments that are an accurate assessment of the quality of work/service. This might be thought of as the accuracy of the review.
In my experience the issue is more often with the latter than the former! Reading a wide range of views can help with this, but ultimately reviews ought only ever to be your first port of call. Using your own judgement on a person and, when appropriate (e.g with major projects), assessing work they have previously carried out first hand is still a good idea.
You would think that if he was that interested in drumming up local business he would sponsor the site and get a banner like other small businesss have.
are the people here complaining about Neil's recommendations all plumbers who are a bit miffed that they're not getting as much free publicity as one of their trade compatriots?? it seems to be a rather strange thing to get all worked up about if they're not....
incidentally we've also used his services and found him to be very reasonably priced, honest, and an excellent tradesman. he always asks me to put a recommendation on here (and, no, there is no discount offered), and up until now I've not done so. be sure that after each engagement of his services in the future I will remedy that situation
I think there's your answer - 'he always asks for a recommendation'. Perhaps I should do the same, but I rather feel that it's up to individuals to post if they feel especially happy with the service.
I called NP for an emergency leak and he promised to come round the next morning, but didn't appear, or even phone. So he's not always perfect.
I also once got a recommendation for a roofer on here who ended up sending me abusive texts when I decided not to use him because he was way too expensive!
