Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

A friend shared this on FB this morning. She met him at the Stoke Newington Festival and said he lived in Harringay.

Around 300 of Mr Aksoy's friends and family gathered at the Kurdish Community Centre in North London in a late night vigil to pay tribute on Tuesday evening.

Mehmet Aksoy, 32, from London, who studied filmmaking at Goldsmiths, University of London, travelled from the UK to Syria in June.

He joined the Kurdish militant group, the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG), and began documenting its battles against IS.

Aladdin Sinayic a close friend of Mr Aksoy's from London, told the BBC: "Mehmet never fought, the plan was never to fight.

"He told me there are better ways. He wanted to tell the stories of the fighters there, he had so much respect for them, and Mehmet was loved by everybody."

Mr Aksoy, who was of Kurdish descent, had spent the past two months filming the battle for Raqqa, publishing his work on social media and on international news outlets.

So many lives lost. RIP Mehmet. And only the other day the Kurdish people voted for independence ...

"It is understood that Aksoy was standing outside the Kurdish militia’s media centre when a small group of jihadis drove up to the base, believed to be some 12 miles (20km) behind the frontline at Raqqa, in pickup trucks and shot five guards at the main gate.

They then drove inside the compound and opened fire, killing Aksoy where he stood as well as a female Kurdish journalist beside him. YPG fighters fought back, killing all the attackers."

Rats backed into a corner...

How sad but I am just full of admiration for people like him and our Kurdish neighbours in general. Any links to where his stuff is published?

He help set up Kurdishquestion.com & discusses that here; https://youtu.be/OcsYwFrnCDk

He was advising my friend Rahila Gupta who was researching equality in the governance of Rojava, the Kurdish part of Syria for her book on equality in governance.
