Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hi everyone,

I live on Fairfax Road and at about 9pm last night somebody tried to break into our house through our lounge window, which unfortunately faces the street (it's one of those big, useless-against-crime, bay windows with a couple of flimsy locks on it, and only a single pane of glass should the burglar be too lazy to try the locks).

They had prised the window open from the bottom with some sort of crowbar or something, breaking the frame. Fortunately my flatmate was home and heard a noise (I was too, but heard nothing!), and thinking it was another flatmate coming into the house, came downstairs to see who it was and say hello. She realised the noise was coming from inside the lounge so she opened the door, which I guess the would-be burglar saw and ran off - they didn't get into the house. Had they done so, they would have been pretty disappointed with the mostly broken contents of the lounge. I, however, would not have been too happy had they made it as far as my bedroom next door!

We called the police, who were absolutely fantastic - there within an hour and a half of our call (considering nothing was stolen, it was a Friday night and given our relatively close proximity to Tottenham, I think this is brilliant - I wasn't expecting them to come round until today, frankly), they asked lots of questions, were very reassuring and even fixed our window for us!

Anyway I guess the moral of the story is that everyone in the area should be extra careful, always leave a light on in the house so it is visible from the front, if you go out or even if you are at home like we were! And if you can, get those useless bay windows at the front of your house replaced with something more secure.

Not a nice feeling for you Helene.

Someone tried the same with my house a couple of years ago. Luckily I had fitted some restrictor bolts (you know, the kind that you screw open with a key and that stop the window opening beyond a couple of inches). Whilst they're going to do nothing against the thief who's happy just to smash the glass, they did see my would-be thief off. I've been more vigilant about security since then.
Stay indoors
Don't go out
Buy stuff.
I'm not quite sure what that's supposed to mean...?
It means that by posting this lovely piece of advice you have scared James into staying inside and being a good little consumer.

But not at 8:30 tonight, right?
introvenously fed fear can be averted if you simply buy things.
Hi Helene

How scary. Just to say that the SNT are advising people on home security at the moment (see this thread). They came round to ours last week and gave us some very helpful tips, including some nifty window alarms that you can fix to your window. You can turn them on or off very easily and they let out a very loud noise if someone starts rattling/breaking a window. Obviously no replacment for good locks, but maybe worth thinking about in addition?
Yes give them a ring and get someone round to have a look. They pointed out a couple of less than secure places in my house and sorted out some solutions for me.
Sorry to hear that Helene, its a horrible creepy feeling. I too have bay windows a the front and sash windows. Have window locks, but also I put little ornaments of coloured glass on mine to fussy up the the top surface of the bottom sash window (if you see what I mean). So I line them up little bottles, jugs, miniture stuff etc so that if anyone dares prize the window open while I'm in, it'll makes a bit of a din. They are lovely when the light comes through and gives me an excuse to go looking in charity shops and the like. Female alarms you might call it.

When someone pitched a brick through my front door one Friday evening a few years ago the police didn't come round till 11 the next morning, so that's very impressive.
