Hi everyone,
I live on Fairfax Road and at about 9pm last night somebody tried to break into our house through our lounge window, which unfortunately faces the street (it's one of those big, useless-against-crime, bay windows with a couple of flimsy locks on it, and only a single pane of glass should the burglar be too lazy to try the locks).
They had prised the window open from the bottom with some sort of crowbar or something, breaking the frame. Fortunately my flatmate was home and heard a noise (I was too, but heard nothing!), and thinking it was another flatmate coming into the house, came downstairs to see who it was and say hello. She realised the noise was coming from inside the lounge so she opened the door, which I guess the would-be burglar saw and ran off - they didn't get into the house. Had they done so, they would have been pretty disappointed with the mostly broken contents of the lounge. I, however, would not have been too happy had they made it as far as my bedroom next door!
We called the police, who were absolutely fantastic - there within an hour and a half of our call (considering nothing was stolen, it was a Friday night and given our relatively close proximity to Tottenham, I think this is brilliant - I wasn't expecting them to come round until today, frankly), they asked lots of questions, were very reassuring and even fixed our window for us!
Anyway I guess the moral of the story is that everyone in the area should be extra careful, always leave a light on in the house so it is visible from the front, if you go out or even if you are at home like we were! And if you can, get those useless bay windows at the front of your house replaced with something more secure.
