The following is from a Tottenham Civic Society circular:
Noisy neighbours driving you mad? There is no need to suffer in silence, or endure murderous thoughts in the wee small hours while your near neighbour undertakes a nocturnal bout of vacuum cleaning, furniture moving, undertaking DIY with noisy drills, hammers and saws, has music, radios or televisions on full volume, or is practising their tap-dancing steps while you are trying to get a good night’s sleep or just resting during the day.
It is well known that such noise nuisance on a regular basis has a bad effect on health.
All of these offences, and others, can be dealt with by contacting Haringey’s Environmental Health Department’s Noise Control Service which has powers to deal with noise problems that affect residents or businesses.
This Service is available Monday to Friday between 8.45am and 5.00pm on 020 8489 5230 or 020 8489 5240. If you are disturbed by noise outside office hours the Noise Control Service operates between 5,00pm to 5.00am Monday to Friday and between 10.00am-6.00pm and 9.00am and 5.00am on Saturdays and Sundays. The number to contact is 020 8348 3148.
All referrals are dealt with in total confidence, with complaints of noise nuisance being dealt with the same day as it is reported to the Service. When taking a phone call, the Service attempts to answer within five rings and all staff will give their name so that you know who you have been talking to.
Once you are within the system, the Service will “take appropriate action based on the assessment to control the noise, including formal action where necessary”.
Formal action may mean a heavy fine or even imprisonment should the noise offence persist despite warnings.
