Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Solar eclipse at the South Harringay Primary school, 1954

30th June 1954 - Children at the South Harringay Primary school view the solar eclipse through a reflection in a bucket of water.

Louis who joined HoL in September 2016, wrote the following to me:

For some reason an image of the little girl in this photo kept coming to mind. I remember she was often teased for her quaint, old fashioned appearance, and an image of her with tears in her eyes stayed buried in the subconscious till recently. Remembering her name was Jennifer Shuker. I 'googled' her and eventually found the photo, with Jennifer clearly recognisable, looking happily into the pail of water. I remember doing it too, and seeing the photo jogged some great memories of South Harringay, children and teachers alike..I passed the 11 plus there and went to Stationers' when it was an all boys' grammar school.

Thanks to new member Louis who wrote to me with some more information about this photo. With his permission I have added it below the image.

How lovely to see children looking at something real instead of an electronic image, (he said posting a comment on a computer!)
