This was also called Pound Cottage, as it was next to the pound where stray or loose animals were kept. This cottage, and the small collection of cottages behind, became known as Friends Cottages because they were inhabited by the Friend family from c.1815 until they were demolished at the turn of the century. For much of the time they were owned by my 4x great grandparents Richard Friend, a bootmaker, and Mary Ann, the laundress. They were also the pound keepers. I have researched the Friend family history and can provide more info if anyone has links to them and is interested.

Indeed, Daniel. Great to hear from a member of the Friend family. Certainly, I’d be very interested in any more you have on your ancestors.
