Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Princess Alexandra Pub & Park Road Crouch End, 1904

The headline of "Tsar apologises to King" on the newspaper board almost ertainky refers to the Dogger Bank Incident of October 1904.

During the Russo-Japanese War, the Russian Baltic Fleet mistook a fleet of British trawlers fishing in the North Sea for Japanese torpedo boats. The Russian warships opened fire, sinking a British boat, killing two fishermen, and injuring several others.

The incident caused a massive diplomatic crisis, bringing Great Britain and the Russian Empire to the brink of war. To defuse the situation, Tsar Nicholas II sent a direct telegram expressing his deep regrets and apologies to King Edward VII, which was widely reported by global newspapers under variation of that headline.

The pub was destroyed by bombing during World War II and was rebuilt by Haringey Council in 1952. It was renamed as Villiers Terrace around 2009 and then back to The Princess Alexandra in 2014.

The taller building in the distance is The Maynard pub.

This was shot almost opposite this photo at around the same time. See also this image from a few hundred yards down the road towards Crouch End.
