At a Southeastern Railway station I use, their nice new ticket machine is built to be card only. And paying for car parking is more smartphone-only than even card-only in some boroughs.

I rarely have cash on me. And haven't had for years, unless I'm going somewhere that I know doesn't take cards. It does make me wonder how much business Afters looses by being cash only.

Scammers paradise these days. And we complain! Still, beats getting mugged I suppose....

Expect to see more of this.

Cash is expensive for businesses to handle. Banks charge businesses not insignificant amounts to deposit cash, and that's once you've got it to them.

For machines, you've got to have someone filling them up with change, and emptying the rest. Not to mention the costs every time a new coin or note is introduced.

Yes, so I wonder why there are business on Green Lanes that charge for debit card transactions under £5. It's allegedly 8p per transaction but the "charge" on Green Lanes is 50p.

There are charges to business for debit cards as well you know. And how many million people don't have access to a bank let alone credit or debit cards? Cash is also more useful if you're budgeting. It's easy to get carried away when you're flashing a card everywhere. Don't knock cash. It has its uses; that's why it's survived for so long. Cards suit big business with staff-cutting on its mind and Governments intent on surveillance of the citizenry.
