Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
West Green Tavern up for sale
It seems the West Green Tavern is on the market.
By the look of the details given on rightmove the pub will stay, with the opportunity to develop housing upstairs.
Does anyone local have strong feelings about what should/ should happen to the building. What would locals like to see in the area? A decent pub would be a nice addition to WGR I think!

You can see my whole history of Harringay's cinemas on Wikipedia (Former Cinemas of Harringay - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Former_cinemas_in_Harringay ). I see that West Green has already helpfully taken text and pictures from there. There are also lots of pictures and other info on our lost cinemas dotted all over HoL.

That explains the thoroughness, nice one Hugh. A bit of googlefu reveals that the church on West Green Road was indeed a cinema.
The Imperial Electric Theatre 290-294 West Green Road opened on 8th November 1913. The architect was E.A. Thorne and he designed an attractive facade which had decorative features of bunches of grapes in the stonework. There was a tiny foyer and the auditorium had seating on one level with decoration which could be described as minimal. The Imperial closed soon after the beginning of World War I but re-opened after the war ended and was known as the Imperial Cinema, operated by the Lion Cinematograph Company Ltd. By 1931 it was operated by H. & G Sado and it had been fitted out with a Western Electric Sound system.
In 1949 it was taken over by the Newcastle-upon-Tyne based Essoldo Circuit cinemas and was re-named Essoldo Cinema. It was fitted with a Cinemascope screen in 1954 but the writing was on the wall for small neighborhood cinemas and it closed on 31st May 1958 with Tyrone Power in “Witness For the Prosecution” and Phillip Friend in “The Betrayal”.

No building is sacrosanct here in Tottenham as 'viability issues' and the 'positive benefits that outway the damage caused' is all too often used to justify the demolition and insidious approval of large private sector developers’ planning applications.
Someone mentioned that 'gentrification' causes the loss of pubs when in fact, first-wave ‘gentrifiers’ tend to be the people who enter the fray and battle to save the character of the neighbourhoods they move to. They tend to have the spending power to frequent the specialist pubs and eating holes that you guys are crying out for and where existing locals can feel displaced from.
Gentrification is a result and a process not something that is wilfully executed by public bodies. It isn't the same as social cleansing being carried out by the big-developer friendly policies and stances that councils (be they Labour, Lib Dem or Tory) all over London are taking. This includes Haringey.
There are serious causal relationships between the 'quality' of our (Haringey) Council and the fact that Tottenham, despite it's advantages - excellent transport links, historic, albeit very dishevelled, architecture and public realm, cheap housing, etc. - continues to be described as a sh**h*le by many people who view it ... - read the comments by Spurs fans about our neighbourhoods.
Very dismissive and condescending of people who live and work here!
If you are interested in saving a pub or a local building then get ACTIVELY involved in your neighbourhood group or RA or campaign and participate in the very many ongoing consultationsorganised by Haringey Council soliciting residents opinion.
Keep a eye on local planning applications and spread the word when these will affect the place negatively such as this one for a 22 floor tower that the developer vclaims will improve the High R...

K K McCools seems to be the last man standing old stool boozer if you what a drink on upper West Green red. if that's your cup of tea, nice enough if rough around the edges, but at least you can get a good Guinness,

The West Green Tavern sold at auction for £1.58million last Monday. Anyone heard anything about the buyers?

We live off West Green Rd and would love to see a decent pub in the area! There's lots of parents from our school that go to The Beehive as it's very childfriendly and is not just a drinking hole / does offer decent and not too pricey food. I know the community would love something similar in the area.
