Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hello all, looking for recommendations for local volunteering for a 70 year old woman. She's active and mobile, so aside from charity shop volunteering, I wondered if anyone knows of any local opportunities - ideally on east side of Haringey so crouch end, finsbury park, muswell hill.

Thanks in advance!

There is a community garden at the Tottenham Quaker Meeting House on Friday mornings from 10am to 12. It is quite general with a few other woman of similar age. There is a lunch and they stay indoors if it’s raining. They give £5 travel, the downside is the meeting house is on the first floor and it’s not in the areas you mentioned.

The edible plants people who meet next to the nursery in finsbury Park seem like a nice group with a range of ages.

TCV Haringey offer volunteering opportunities in conservation; surveying, and on the education team working with primary level (DBS req for that). There a number of older people who take part in all activities. You don't have to commit yourself to a long period, you can literally sign up once for conservation session or a survey to see if you like it.

They do sessions in Queens Wood, Coldfall Wood, Finsbury Park, Parkland Walk, Railway Fields etc. You can read about the sessions here and sign up.

The Whittington Hospital is always looking for volunteers. I used to do a day a week but they are fine with half days.  Duties range from acting as a guide to going to the shops for bits and bobs for patients on the ward.

Great response so far thank you. Welcome any more :)

Quite a few schools need volunteers to help with reading practice. It's a nice thing to do and indoors where it's warm!

Hornsey Food Bank at Middle Lane Methodist Church is good and Alexandra Palace has a range of volunteering opportunities.

Repair Café volunteering: Although not in the East, one of our monthly events is 100m from a W4 bus stop. The W4 is every ten minutes or so and goes right into the heart of the Broadwater Farm Estate from Wood Green\Turnpike Lane so if she doesn't mind a change of bus...

I think everyone has fixing skills. The Repair Café operates a sort of collaboration where people swap knowledge and ideas as to how to rescue something someone's ask for help mending. Could be a toaster, a holey jumper, a laptop, a wooden stool etc etc

It's more about troubleshooting than expertise. The sort of logic tempered by experience that older people are good at.  Is she sees herself as a good organiser or simply someone who likes making tea that's also needed.

Everyone is welcome to just have a look at what we're doing, no need to join in a repair. It helps us if you book a free "observer" ticket here: bit.ly/HaringeyFixers.
