Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Tollgate pub closed
I'm sorry to see that the Wetherspoons pub in Turnpike Lane- the Tollgate- has closed, leaving the immediate area without a pub. Although some have strong feelings about 'Spoons, it was generally a friendly place with a good range of cheap beers and food. I believe another pubco may be taking the premises, but i doubt they will offer such good value....

We turned up last Sunday evening and were surprised to find it so packed out. Then we saw people hugging and realised something was up. It turned out it was the last night.
It was a remarkable place. We’d been going there for over ten years and it seemed to us that around forty or fifty per cent of the customers knew each other at least slightly. We are quite reserved so we were only observers of all this and never got to know people, though we recognised so many of them. But we really liked the atmosphere of the place and are very sad to see it go.

By the way, this was one of Wetherspoon's longest established pubs, opening around 34 years ago..

Tollgate closed but The Old Dairy at Stroud Green/Crouch Hill junction to reopen sometime (not yet) - the security shrouds are down, scaffolding up. The restoration plans can be read here -

It's not quite Harringay or Haringey, but I think as a nearby listed building and pub it has earned a leg up.

Wetherspoons are closing many of their pubs right across London and the country. The Coronet on Holloway Road is up for the sale and once sold will no longer be a Spoons, maybe not even a pub. The Angel, at the Angel, is going as well. Whilst I'm pleased that the Tollgate will remain pub, Wetherspoons have become over the years unofficial community centres. Especially as so many/most of the working men's and social clubs have closed down. Pubs and clubs are so much more than a few pints and I've written extensively about the social and community roles they provide. Wetherspoons pubs, given their low prices, provided a warm, social space for people of all ages but for older people with no family around, they became like a second home. They could stay for hours and not have to spend so much and yes, many friendships were made.
The warm aspect has become even more important given the huge hike in energy costs that have been laid on us.
I can understand that many people were hugging and feeling emotional the last night of the Tollgate 'Spoons. I worry about those who won't have anywhere to go once their pub closes, who can't afford the higher prices in the other pubs and who'll be, as many have told me over the year, 'condemned to solitary confinement at home'..... So we need to support our pubs and try to ensure they are still available for all ages and generations.
Sorry a bit of a rant! But we need our social, community spaces and this includes pubs, social clubs.

Yes, I completely agree. 'Extensively' would be a bit strong in my case but my organisation wrote a report saying just that last year.
