The Queens pub in Crouch End
Hi all.
I heard from the landlord of the Springfield pub on Bounds Green road that the owner of the Queens has declared bankruptcy.
Anyone else heard this?
Makes me think that this lockdown will close a good few of our locals.
The Starting Gate by ally pally train station is still closed but I see their sister pub the Ranleigh has been open for a while. The Prince on Bounds Green road is open now so that pub is safe?
Be an absolute shame if the Queens is gone as it was one of the last of the old school palaces left in the area. Hopefully if it has gone into receivership it'll re-open again under new management and not be changed.....hopefully?

According to the Internet, the Queen's is part of the Food and Fuel group of pubs, which went into administration in late March. That in turn is part of the Restaurant Group which has just gone into a CVA.

Good dilligence. It will inevitably fall in the hands of a private equity group, will get loaded with debt and come back online at some point. I bet it was a decent asset given its character and prominent position on an affluent high street.

The Starting Gate is heavily dependent on major mass events at Ally Pally and I can't see it re-opening until these resume. However its two sister pubs owned by Mitchell & Butler have a more varied demographic and have re-opened (The Ranelagh & The Maid of Muswell). The Springfield has a regular loyal following as well. The Prince adapted well to Lockdown, first offering take-away food & drink for consumption in Finsbury Gardens with many new customers flocking to this oasis, and now with a safe, slickly run and sanitary re-opening of the interior. I can see the take-aways continuing, although this successful model could be hit by a second spike in more inclement weather
Crouch End denizens should keep an eye on any planning proposals for redevelopment of The Queens. The Asset of Community Value status that we had to apply for The Prince in 2015 is now a statutory requirement for any property shark looking to change the function of a pub (a 6 month moratorium on proposed change of use to give the community an opportunity to respond, as with The Antwerp Arms in Tottenham). However, the planning process in Haringey is about as transparent as mud to lay folk.

The Queens is listed at Grade II* which gives it some degree of protection and any changes have to be approved by Historic England.

It always felt fairly busy when I went in. It's a friendly pub with what seems to be a pretty strong core of regulars.
Glad to hear it's reopening, it's my favourite sports pub in the area and I'd be disappointed if it lost its proper pub atmosphere and became another exposed brick, filament lamps, craft beer and cocktails place.

I sat outside at the Salisbury early in the week. They are struggling and were considering not opening every day. I was surprised to learn that Haringey fine them for putting seats outside - and are continuing to do so in the middle of a pandemic. In previous years they have just paid the fines - but will struggle to do so now. Surely we should be encouraging people to sit outside?
