Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Christmas is coming and the scammers are out in force.

Thankfully Polly Toynbee in the Guardian is on the case.

There are lots of alternative shoe box schemes out there - that operate with no ulterior motive.

Last year, I supported one run be a church in Enfield and I am sure there are more local churches and organisations too that run them.

The article links to those alternatives and also to a template letter you can send to your children's school if they get involved in this scheme.

This is what is put into the boxes.

And here is why shoeboxes can actually be harmful to the local economies.

I read it...if there's a homophobic or anti-muslim message in there I must have missed it...

I suggest you do some basic research into Franklin Graham and in particular check out his Facebook page and Twitter account.

I hope this site won't become devoted to 'whataboutery' - it is a hyperlocal community forum in the main part. For example, the only Harringay-specific connection with this story is that Graham's father, Billy Graham, held many evangelical rallies at Harringay Arena in the fifties.
The other thing I note is that Polly Toynbee is vice-president of Humanists, so one would expect a raised eyebrow from her about all things religious.

It may be of local concern if local people may be supporting it without knowing the background. Last Christmas people collecting at the check-out of a local supermarket for weeks turned out to be from an evangelical church in Finsbury Park with a questionable history. It is wise to give to charities etc that you can trust and whose motives are positive and clear.

" It is wise to give to charities etc that you can trust and whose motives are positive and clear."  Which was the reason why - despite being completely non-religious - I supported a local church scheme that was doing good because it needed to be done and for no other reason.

The Harringay specif issue here is how many schools in this area are being conned into taking part in this scheme, I mean scam.

As regards Polly Toynbee, you will of course note that the BHA website she points you to lists another Christian charity as an alternative to this one, which is hardly raising her eyebrows at all things religious is it.

So "how many schools in this area are being conned" is your question. Well, you asked it, and you can answer it by engaging   direct   with each   local   school, then you will know the answer. Job done.    Then it becomes a matter of local interest.

The most irksome aspect of the 'whatabouteries' is their insistence on donning the mantle of the world's guardian.  People are not stupid - even as children - and are more capable of looking after themselves than you believe.  Let us decide for ourselves, please, what is right and what is wrong.  We may or may not agree with you but the choice is for the individual concerned, not for the obtruder.

Polly Toynbee supports the idea of filling shoeboxes and giving at Christmas and mentions those distributed by local food banks however I think she is right to reveal that the evangelical church concerned has an alterior purpose in getting other people to give on their behalf and that is their aim of gaining conversions and spreading their associated right wing agenda. This is against bible teaching of giving without wanting anything in return!

Indeed so. I rather favour for example the Jewish principle that you give anonymously via a third party. Thus the recipient does not feel they owe you anything and the giver does not ever find out who receives.
