Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

PLEASE JOIN ME .... WE NEED MORE VOICES .... to complain about rubbish collection and the state of the streets around Turnpike Lane Tube.  The area is dirty.  Every day, morning and evening, bags of rubbish are piled around the bins at the end of Frome Road, outside the station and on Westbury.

There is no good reason why standards and service should be lower around TP Lane.  But they are.  Green Lanes/Manor House is cleaner and better cared for.  The new paving will do nothing to make the area look better until the basics are taken care of.

I have downloaded the 'Our Haringey' App, contacted the council and am tweeting pics daily to @VeoliaUK   I am @itsafaff.  Please join me in making our service providers aware of the problems until they do something about it - They must provide a service that meets the needs of the area and get local shops involved in keeping the streets around them cleaner.

Anyone who uses the pigeon-poo infested alley that cuts through from the stn to Westbury will know what a filthy hole it is.  At night it's intimidating, unlit and smells of weed.  It should be cleaned of the poo, lit and ideally have a security camera to deter the obvious dealing.

The app and twitter make it easier to have a voice.  I am fed up of walking past this, smelling it, seeing the area getting short changed.  Why can't local shops get out a boom or a shovel and spend 30 mins a day cleaning around their pavement?

Anyone else live around here and feel the same?  Any ideas for what else we can do about it?

Great work jackie, and thanks for the reminder.  Lots of stuff is getting dumped at the end of Langham road and now which is really obnoxious.  I'll get on to the council

Green lanes/ Manor House is in Hackney that's why!

Lealie, Hackney starts where the New River passes under Green Lanes by Rowley Gardens. Harringay and Wood Green are both wholly within Haringey.

In my bit of Seven Sisters Road close to the border, Hackney are doing such a remarkably better job of managing the trash that you'd think Haringey would be embarrassed into action. You can more or less navigate by the sudden lack of adequate bins and endless marooned rubbish sacks.

Exactly Abster. I believe Hackney didn't contract out its waste service and still provides weekly general waste collection too. You as you enter Haringey on high road you know you've crossed the border by the heaping purple bags and all the fly tipped waste added onto the pile! It's disgusting and criminal that we pay council tax for a service that isn't,t adequately provided by any stretch of the imagination. The guise of fortnightly collections being environmental is a joke. It's led to more overflowing bins, rats foxes and more fly tipping. How does that help the environment?

I agree, and have followed you Jackie. I am @ktkinnear on twitter. I also suggest you contact the West Green  councillors Toni Mallett @mallett_toni, Eugene Akwasi-Ayisi @Eugene_ayisi, Eddie Griffith and also Stuart McNamara the Environment guy at the council @SJMMcNamara stuart.mcnamara@haringey.gov.uk

Katie

Thanks so much, have done just that and am posting here an update today.
I see Stuart has been helpful in getting some bins elsewhere in the borough, I will contact him directly.
Really useful advice
Thanks. Will do. Have contacted the councillors. When i leafleted shops ladt night - some owners were pleased, fed up of council not clearing the rubbish. It is mostly commercial waste i think - pink sacks - but they have nowhere else to put it. Council should be providing more bins and collecting more regularly. Anyone else find that ally between Westbury n TP Lane stn filthy as well? They now put sawdust down on the pigeon poo. Beolia phoned to say the 'a bit behind on their collections this week' but that doesn't explain the fact it has been like this for months and more. Last night driving around i noticed pink bags out by bins everywhere.
Great points raised guys and I agree wholeheartedly.
Another easy way to report dumped rubbish et is via a website called www.fixmystreet.com, which automatically sends emails to the council.

Keeping the streets cleans seems to be such a difficult task! The purple bags particularly annoy me - I think they contain litter and rubbish swept by street cleaners working for Veolia? (Not certain on this though) but either way seems ridiculous as it just attracts more rubbish from passers by!
I read on the council's operation street clean they are trailing some drop boxes for street cleaners to dump rubbish in, rather than have it left on the street( have copied the blurb and link to page below) - I have emailed them asking for them to come Turnpike Lane station and on Green Lanes. As always no specific reply on the matter yet.

I' be happy to work with people in the area to bring ideas/plans together on this issue. I will also steal your flyer idea and print/distribute them at the top end of Green Lanes and Ducketts Common area too, if you haven't already Jackie?

Trial Drop Boxes

Currently, waste collected by our street cleaners is left in purple bags which are picked up throughout the day. The introduction of drop boxes will enable us to store these bags in a box rather than leaving them on the pavement.

This will improve the appearance of our streets and help discourage fly-tipping.

The drop boxes are being rolled out to locations such as on Tottenham High Road.

broken link - please google Haringey and operation clean streets
Boxes would be good.

I only leafletted around the tube and Westbury Ave am afraid. Happy to do more though. I can email my leaflet but it very focused on that area - photos etc. But cd be a template. Not v sophisticated - but I think going in and talking to the shopkeepers made a difference. I plan to follow up in a couple of weeks - if the council have done a little something by then it will help. I emailed CLLR Toni Mallet just now and copied you in. Didn't know how to copying HoL website. Happy for it to be posted if useful.

Yes - I think the purple bags are Veolia street cleaner bags. I saw the guy around TP lane filling, tying up and leaving it. And that explains why so many left by street litter bins around the borough last night. It does encourage others to dump.

I had thought about going to that stinky ally between TP stun and Westbury with a shovel and bucket scrape up the pigeon poo myself but a bit nervous to do it alone.
