I am ashamed to say I have never walked along the New River. Can you tell me how/where to access it Hugh?

Angela, there is an entry to the new river on Wightman Rd between Hewitt and Allison Rds, you come out near the Hornsey rail bridge and the mosque. It's a lovely stretch.

Or for the other direction if you walk south down Green Lanes past the Homebase you'll see an entrance on the left

Wow - what a big group of babies! Lovely to see. I saw a couple of baby moorhens on the river the other week, such ridiculous-looking little things but rather adorable with it *lol*

I don't know what the problem is but the river is barely flowing and is becoming smelly.  Thames Water have drastically reduced the amount of water allowed to enter the river upstream from Harringay.  The water weed that always grows vigourously in the summer is covering most of the surface and if the flow is not soon restored it seems likley to lead to unpleasantness both for for humans and wildlife and anyone who lives nearby or who uses the footpaths.

I have noticed that from my daily crossing of the bridge on Burgoyne Rd that the New River has been dropping steadily for about 2 weeks. The base of the traffic cone 'depth-marker' is visible. Might be a good moment to clear out some of the assorted junk on the bottom.

I just had a talk with a New River supervisor about the low level of the water etc.  He said that the growth of water weed upstream (in Hertfordshire) has been so great in the hot weather that it has slowed down the flow.  Water levels there are lapping the top of the banks and they are working to clear obstructions and to get it moving in our direction.  The level at Wightman Road rose a little yesterday but there is still along way to go.  As they succeed in moving the water along, they will need to turn their attention to clearing weed from the grating at the start of the Wightman Road tunnel.  Othewise we shall face a repeat of the flood we had in July last year, see:http://www.harringayonline.com/forum/topics/wightman-road-gardens-f...
