I'm looking forward to going to the drop in this afternoon about the proposed High Street changes, which all looks very exciting. The one thing I think would really make the environment and is clearly missing is a diagonal crossing at Warham Road / Green Lanes.
These crossings have been incredibly popular in Japan in recent decades and in the last couple of years we've had our own hugely successful one at Oxford Circus followed by a pretty successful one at Wood Green.
The idea is that the crossings get moved much closer to the junction, the horrible and dangerous barriers for cyclists are removed and the whole of the junction area is raised flush with the pavement. When the green man blinks people can then cross in all directions at the same time including diagonally. It doesn't slow down traffic on the roads and greatly improves human flow. It also makes the whole junction area more open, human and friendly and it helps to calm traffic.
I've mocked up a drawing of how it would look (the relative road and pavement dimensions are all accurate), which is below. If anyone would like to see this happen, then PLEASE say so in the consultation document feedback form and let them know in the drop-in sessions. Thanks!

Yes there is clearly also a good case for the one St. Ann's road, but as it's a T junction, not a crossroads, in my opinion it's not quite the same problem that the Warham / Salisbury Road junction is.
I was thinking of doing a diagram and proposal with diagonal crossings for both junctions, but I thought if I asked for too much it might have a negative effect on the proposal, so I concentrated on the Warham junction instead.
Like it a lot! The raised surface would hopefully stop traffic 'zooming' up the first part of Warham when the lights change.
Thanks Maggie. Yes, it would both calm traffic and make it much, much easier and nicer for pedestrians to get around Green Lanes.
Good question Paul, it would be good if we knew that. I don't know. However, what I do know is that under the existing Green Lanes plans there is already going to be raised crossings built over Warham Road and Salisbury Road and they are already getting rid of all the corner fencing. So a lot of the cost is stuff that is going to happen anyway. The additional cost would be extending the raised section across the junction, which can't be too much more seeing as they're doing the same work already at the same junction, plus probably changing the traffic lights.
Thanks Paul. Yes, I agree it's a no brainer. I couldn't say for certain that the bulk (ie majority) of the cost is already accounted for, as I don't know if the work on the lights (which is extra) outweighs or the work on the barriers the paving (which is already being done), but certainly a sizeable proportion is already accounted for.
Now we just need to get a head of steam up on the idea!....
I spoke to one of the bods at the consultation earlier this week about this Hugo. He said nice idea but they had ruled it out as it will mop up something like 50% of the total budget for the funding stream dealing with road improvement...
Hmm, I spoke to them about it too at the consultation, at length, and the guy I spoke to was very enthusiastic about it. The other guy was less so, but the second guy I spoke to was pretty defensive anyway. I'd like to see how they came up with that maths as the works on the railings and pavement are already being done anyway. It could also potentially come from another pot I suppose. Where did Wood Green get the money for their crossing for example? Even if it's funded from a slightly different route it would be crazy not doing it at the same time. I don't think we can just accept them saying "no, it's too expensive" without challenging them on it more!
