Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Anyone else see a bird that looked very like a buzzard, circling above Fairfax Road just before noon today (Sunday)?

I do hope so - that would be wonderful.  I few years ago I was in the garden when a kestrel swooped down to take a young squirrel siting on the fence.  It (the squirrel) ducked the last minute.

Image check here if it helps

I didn’t see this one today but I have seen buzzards, red kites, kestrels & Sparrowhawks locally & the Peregrines (a bit further afield) over the years.

I once spotted a red kite circling lazily over the ladder and moving westward.

We had a pair of ravens on our flat roofed extension the other day. I put peanuts, in their shell, on that roof everyday. I already have a pair of crows who visit daily (and leave presents) but never thought there were ravens around here. It was a red letter day!

And a number of years ago, when we had a large local flock of sparrows, we had a sparrow hawk visit and prey on the sparrows. It was fascinating and horrifying to watch it hunt out the poor sparrows who were hiding in bushes. We only saw it the once but the sparows were very wary of our garden after that.

I saw this from Albany Road, it looked huge! I tried to get my partner to come and see but she couldn't find her glasses! Unfortunately I am not very good at identifying birds but it was definitely a large bird of prey.

Meant to write - we have buzzards sometimes circling above our work at Barking Riverside - normally hear their call before seeing them, riding the thermals. And nothing better than pointing out a peregrine falcon hovering over a bit of our yard to a young local and telling them "its the fastest animal on earth!"

There are peregrines up at Ally Pally and down on Holloway Road. Normally you can view the falcon-cam nest site  at Metropolitan Univ  https://hml.londonmet.ac.uk/Live/34 - but currently building works suspending it.

I live on the top of the Evergreen development and see birds of prey circle over the area to the east.

Every chance. There has been a bird at Ally Pally recently - and last autumn this beauty made the wood chip yard in Finsbury Park its home for several months:

If it was low over the ladder, however, Red Kite is probably more likely, especially as it looked "huge" to at least one observer (Kites have a considerably wider wingspan than Buzzards).

Buzzards tend to stay higher up, circling on thermals at a shallow angle, with their wings raised slightly. Kites often come far lower, and when in flight show a forked tail which twists this way and that as it rides the wind.

Birds of prey in urban areas will often be "mobbed" by crows and magpies - so if you spot a group of corvids coming noisily together in the sky, it's often worth taking a closer look with binoculars to see what may be causing their agitation.

Re gardens and hovering: Sparrowhawks will raid gardens but never hover; Kestrels hover, but rarely will visit gardens. Anyway: keep looking up!
