Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hello All,

I recently moved to Bruce Grove and have noticed that rubbish only gets collected once a fortnight. This doesn't happen in most other boroughs, particularly the more affluent ones so why are we subjected to it, it's a disgraceful neglect that denegrades the area and belittles all who live here.

For about ten days we have our rubbish sitting and rotting outside, food festering, stench rising and flies swarming.  Not to mention leaving more time for eager foxes to rip apart and feast on, often using our front patios as dinner tables.

I'd like to petition someone to bring an end to this brazen disregard for our area (you certainly wouldn't have this in Stoke Newington, let alone Mayfair) but wanted to know other people's thoughts on this - and if anyone had a good idea about who best to direct the petition at?

On another note, I also wanted to gauge what enthusiasm there may be for starting a voluntary group to clean the streets around Bruce Grove - I'm currently in discussions with the council about getting equipment to help with this and finding out where we can leave the rubbish for collection once we pick it up. I don't expect a swift answer but I am working on it...

Best,
Richard

Hi Richard

Welcome to the area. I assume you are covered by the same arrangement as us (off Green Lanes N4), our food and recyclable waste is collected once a week in separate bins. What we  have left is every other week and frankly for us this generally only amounts to around a carrier bag's worth, except it's not a carrier bag as they go in the green bin..........! I am wondering whether it's just that you're new to the area and nobody has explained the 'system' - clearly if your food waste is only being collected every 2 week that's a potential nightmare!

I hope this helps,

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the reply - yeah haven't been made aware of that, so do I need a separate bin and bin bags?

I guess the thing is, I might be new but most people on the street don't seem to be aware of it either, so either people are just disregarding it or they haven't been given adequate information and advice about how to dispose of their waste.

I sense this is a fairly new initiative that is probably well intentioned environmentally but in practical terms is not really working at present...

Richard, the Haringey how-the-system-works page on refuse collection is *LINK* here.

And there's loads more about recycling, food waste (which is collected every week if you have and use the correct bin for it) and so on in neighbouring pages. Happy reading.

Ha, yes looks like I've gone in a bit strongly on the petition front! Thanks for your help. I think the main thing is I now understand how it works and in reality once you recycle everything and bin your food waste separately there really isn't much other waste to dispose of.

However, the problem is getting everyone on board. I know we need to be responsible for ourselves but how many people are fully aware of these arrangements - not sure the message is getting through.
