Does anyone know what 'dump rubbish and furniture' means?
In Madrid (and I believe many other cities) every neighbourhood has a different day to leave unwanted furniture in the street. It is effective - I had a whole flat furnished with things found on the street. I've left things out in the street here too in the hope they might be given a good home. Apologies if I was bringing down the tone of the area.

Not so much lowering the tone as breaking the law I'm afraid and risking a fine.
It's not permitted to leave unwanted items on the pavement (although there is nothing to stop you leaving them in a front garden with a note that they are free to take away or indeed advertising what you have to give away online here). If you put them in the street, its called fly tipping.
Many bulky items are removed for free by the council contractors and are recycled and sold at low cost to those in need.

I have long thought that we need a return to the community clean ups that happened every few months which allowed people to put out unwanted items on one particular day and the council contractors would take them (it was also an opportunity to do a bit of scavenging), however my requests continue to fall on deaf ears.
Your comment is also a reminder that the process of helping people to dispose of their waste in a legal way is an ongoing one which requires regular re-visiting. Another issue that Haringey and Veolia have failed to get to grips with.

Heartily agree about the community clear out days. They were a great success and you knew that at the end of the day or weekend anything that hadn't been taken would be cleared by the waste contractor.
Vanfrs - the stuff people leave out in Barcelona may be useful, reusable items. Here it tends to be piss stained mattresses that no one wants and some neighbour has to go to the bother of reporting and chasing until they are removed because the dumper can't be arsed just to pick up the phone and do it themselves.

I don't see anyone reusing this. And the dumper carefully put his garden table right next to the tree, making it impossible for someone with a baby buggy to get past without going into the road.

Retrospectively I can clearly see the difference and there is indeed round the corner from me a mattress that is beyond redemption, particularly after being rained on for a week - by anyone's standards I think leaving it there could be called inconsiderate and its useful to nobody, apart from potentially some of the local rodents.
Had a totally different interpretation on first reading. Goes to show, always remember the mantra, think first post later....

The problem is - if useful furniture etc is put out on the street, it leads some people to think that they can dump anything.
Freecycle is a brilliant way to pass unwanted but useful items on.

Yes I had someone trying to walk off with an office chair while I was loading it from my house to my car outside, I was stood with it trying to work out how to fit it in, and he was very put out when I told him to let go.

I have been known to collect items I find left out, & fit for sale for charity shops on Green Lanes. Please don't leave them on your walls, they can pay for a McMillan Nurse for an hour, if you see it that way.
