Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

The following is from a Tottenham Civic Society circular:

Noisy neighbours driving you mad? There is no need to suffer in silence, or endure murderous thoughts in the wee small hours while your near neighbour undertakes a nocturnal bout of vacuum cleaning, furniture moving, undertaking DIY with noisy drills, hammers and saws, has music, radios or televisions on full volume, or is practising their tap-dancing steps while you are trying to get a good night’s sleep or just resting during the day.
It is well known that such noise nuisance on a regular basis has a bad effect on health.

All of these offences, and others, can be dealt with by contacting Haringey’s Environmental Health Department’s Noise Control Service which has powers to deal with noise problems that affect residents or businesses.

This Service is available Monday to Friday between 8.45am and 5.00pm on 020 8489 5230 or 020 8489 5240. If you are disturbed by noise outside office hours the Noise Control Service operates between 5,00pm to 5.00am Monday to Friday and between 10.00am-6.00pm and 9.00am and 5.00am on Saturdays and Sundays. The number to contact is 020 8348 3148.

All referrals are dealt with in total confidence, with complaints of noise nuisance being dealt with the same day as it is reported to the Service. When taking a phone call, the Service attempts to answer within five rings and all staff will give their name so that you know who you have been talking to.

Once you are within the system, the Service will “take appropriate action based on the assessment to control the noise, including formal action where necessary”.

Formal action may mean a heavy fine or even imprisonment should the noise offence persist despite warnings.

We had to call the out of hours noise team a couple of weeks ago when a car alarm kept going off through the night. We thought the team that responded were excellent, very understanding but professional in their approach with us and the numpty whose car was causing the probelm.
Some time ago we had cause to use the Council 'noise service'. The response was excellent from start to finish - and the noise did finish!
I'm not that impressed. They're either too busy, or they turn up some 5 - 6 hour later when I've already gone mad and murdered the culprit several times over. In my mind anyway.. And the noise has normally stopped by then. And without proof they can't do anything. So....
Hi Karen, incredibly frustrating!!!! What they don't tell you is that they log all calls, so if you leave your name and address then they will know that you keep on calling about the same thing, and when they finally manage to come round and catch the person in the act then they'll have back-up. I went thorugh the same thing for months and wa sa bout to go nuts. I'd go out and find the address the noise is coming from if I were you. That way you'll have a bit more ammo for next time you're calling, and they can log a compaint against that address as well. Good luck!!
I think a "flyer" style notice is a good idea. A friendly request to contact the noise nuisance team may just be the motivation your neighbours need to report the problem too.

Some people who don't use HoL or aren't as well informed may not know such a resource or support is available and are as frustrated as your with the problem. It'll hopefully give you the support you need to stop this happening for good and hopefully get help for the person creating all the noise. Good luck with it and sending you lots of strength in the interim!
If it sounds like someone needs help then maybe try the police?
The letter is not a bad idea!
Try contacting your neighbourhood community policewo/man. They can come round and investigate. Thats what they are there for.
I had the same problem. Then it went away when a certain person was spoken to by someone in a uniform.
You ask why nobody else complains. The other people in your block are all probably thinking exactly the same thing. Try knocking on couple doors. Meet your neighbours say hello and have a chat/cuppa.
