Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
No right turn on Hewit rd
We had a leaflet from haringey today saying that the decision to reverse the traffic flow had been shelved and instead a no right turn would be put in place, along with penalty cameras.
I think it is a shame that the reverse traffic flow has been halted as I think that would have genuinely helped with our problems on Hewit but I wondered what anyone else thought. There is a chance to respond about this decision to the council.

I'd say at least 75% of the drivers using Hewitt had come north up Wightman as they are all looking to get around the gardens (gated) and off east through St Ann's. If you're coming from the North you'd turn down a road well before Hewitt as Green Lanes is OK after St Ann's Rd.

I see now that there is a sign for the south bound traffic but it is badly positioned on the right hand side of the road almost opposite the turning to Hewitt.

In which case it is practically useless (as possibly not lawful) as evidenced by the fact that I missed it and, after driving down Hewitt Road as usual the other day (having come from Hornsey) found to my dismay that they had finally banned right turns at the bottom. So of course I like the previous poster had to go through the farcical (and of course hazardous) process of turning left, stopping and then making a u-turn on Green Lanes before driving south and turning left at the Salisbury as planned.
To my mind the council have only EVER made things worse. I cannot recall a single thing they have done to make life better.
For example:
Bad -
Widening pavement by Salisbury
Ignoring requests for a crossing at the bottom of Harringay Road
Trying to change the name of Harringay to "Harringay Green Lanes"
Allowing HMOs, legal and illegal, ugly street furniture, and betting shops to flourish
Replacing paving slabs all along Green Lanes while leaving shabby footpaths elsewhere and also failing to do anything to fix the pocked, pitted and practically deadly bus lane between St Ann's Road and Finsbury Park
Banning right turns at the bottom of Hewitt Road when they worked perfectly well
Digging up the pavements outside the Salisbury and then leaving them dug up - presenting eyesores as well as hazards for pedestrians - for MONTHS
Repeatedly renting out Finsbury Park for profit..
Ripping up a much-loved local playground at Anstey Walk (by West Green Road), failing to consult properly on the works to be done, then announcing a series of improvements before agreeing secretly with the police at the last minute to remove the most popular feature of the playground and replace it with a slide for babies, in order (they claimed) to prevent drug-dealing
Failing to provide wardens or park keepers to prevent trashing and vandalising of local playgrounds (eg Anstey Walk)..
Allowing vehicles like the "ambulances" near George's Fish Bar to park illegally on yellow lines day after day after day despite complaints while towing away and impounding private vehicles parked partially on pavements etc
Failing to stop drivers breaking the red light by Fairline (as was) which they do many, many times a day (every two or three minutes, in fact)
etc etc etc etc ad infinitum and ad nauseam.....

Why not? Have they abandoned plans for the "(pick)pocket park"?

Was going past there just now so stopped for a moment, 7 cars came out of Hewitt, 5 of them turned right despite the no right turn signs. Could be quite an earner when the camera first gets installed - theres what 2100 cars per day on Hewitt, 5/7 turn right, £80 fine = 2100 * 5 / 7 * £80 = £120k per day!

Presumably once those who regularly drive down Hewitt remember about the new system, the numbers will go down...
It will be interesting to see what the impact is on other roads - I think I'm right that if it's a big issue for one particular road gaining all the problems from Hewitt hen the system will be reconsidered after six months? But for now I am looking forward to not having to queue to leave the road every morning ;-)

I'm afraid what you've just described sounds fairly light for Hewitt at peak rush hour - and I've just done my own 3 minute count (5.51-5.54) and got to 13 cars (and a motorbike) - and this seemed quite quiet for this time of day! How many turned each way I can't say, but it's undeniable that, due to the proximity to the traffic lights, we get a lot of traffic on Hewitt and it can take a particularly long time for cars to turn right out of the road.
I've no doubt other roads have their own traffic issues, and you're right, maybe the residents' associations should campaign for more changes!

Don't worry, not taking it personally! And I agree that one big residents association would make more sense! I guess I'm just happy that this change will benefit me despite me having had nothing to do with ;-) selfish, I know! No doubt as time goes on we shall see wha effect it has on everyone else.
