Last October I raised the issue that possible street closures in surrounding areas would displace traffic our way.
One of the areas was Crouch End.
A consultation for those living/working in the area is in progress and one of the options being consulted on is the closure to through traffic (except for buses, emergency vehicles and cyclists) of one or more major roads, such as The Broadway.
A traffic survey for the Crouch End project suggests such a change might mean 2000 more vehicles a day in both directions for Wightman.
Harringay residents can make their views known via the questionnaire.

John - you don't have to live on the ladder (I don't) to appreciate the problems that Wightman already suffers - Haringey does seem to have the knack of consultation but then introducing further problems of their and our own. Having apologised for introducing the original Crouch End CPZ - basically Mountview Road - they then consulted on introducing further and yet further extentions until they came up with Crouch End A&B. What those who were consulted wanted was a single scheme covering the whole of Crouch End - no, the council went ahead with A (10 to 12) and B (2 to 4). They now say that we are worried about people who work in Crouch End moving their car from one side of Crouch End to the other. Incidentally in Crouch End we are well served by Oakfield Road and Endymion Road so have no need of Wightman. What some of us here are concerned with is the effect that the "liveable' Crouch End scheme will have on neighbouring roads like... Wightman. Cheap shots don't help...
As I've said earlier in this conversation (and backed up with links), when there was the possibility of filtering on Wightman, itself surrounded by traffic mitigation measures, the people of Crouch End vociferously objected. No way am I going to support what they're after unless they allow Wightman to be filtered. I am also going to bend the ears of our local Councillors.
Which Crouch Enders was this? Wightman Road isn’t a route that’s needed if you live in Crouch End. Potentially people in Stroud Green use it rather than Green Lanes if going north and eastwards but anyone kn crouch end has far better ways of going north.

Elizabeth, do you not think Crouch Enders drive to Tottenham, avoiding Turnpike Lane and instead using the Ladder rung roads? I assure you, they do.
Let's say you're coming back from Ikea in Tottenham/Edmonton to your abode in Crouch End. You could go all the way around the North Circular but it's just chaos from Green Lanes to the A109 so savvy people head through Tottenham Hale/Seven Sisters and along West Green Road where they are dumped out right opposite the Queen's HeadDogtas on Green Lanes and continue around the back of Duckett's common and up Lausanne or Raleigh to Wightman and then under the bridge and safe back in Crouch End. That simple trip around the back of the common avoids a staggering FOUR sets of traffic lights too.
North yes, North East and East, no. All because of the North Circular.
Any car journeys undertaken in our central Crouch End household involve cabs. A cab ride to St Anns Hospital typically involves turning right into Wightman at the Turnpike Lane junction and then taking one of the ladder roads down to pick up St Ann's Rd off Green Lanes.
However, unlike Hugh, I am not of the opinion that Crouch End is used to a great degree for non-local rat-running, unlike Wightman etc. I just don't think it is a practical rat-running route although it is a major route to Muswell Hill. I noted on one of these threads that Adrian Essex gave some concrete figures for Tottenham Lane and also showed that traffic had reduced in the past few years. As someone who crosses central Crouch End roads on foot multiple times daily, I know the actual volume of traffic is not that great for a junction of 4 relatively major roads like this. The problem is that it doesn't take much for things to clog up: a mis-parked UPS van, a broken down bus, roadworks etc etc. This is why the closure of Middle Lane was a failure because it removed the key safety valve.
You don’t have to do that rat run on wightman and the ladder roads if you want to go from turnpike lane to green lanes or west green road or indeed go up westbury ave towards IKEA. Just use the main roads and turn right or go straight on at the traffic lights. You are saving yourself only tiny amounts of time by rat running and causing misery to residents. Perhaps people need to be less selfish when they drive. Personally I’ve not used that method to go from Crouch End to Tottenham or IKEA .
A lot of the time the route people take is just whatever is advised on Google or Waze or whatever.
If you look at Google's route for a Saturday afternoon from Ikea to Crouch End for instance it sends you along the ladder and Wightman to avoid the traffic.
John, I think taking Adrian's "exactly the right traffic scheme for Wightman" in conjunction with "saving Hornsey town hall" means he isn't being 100% serious. I doubt anyone thinks Wightman is a good example of traffic management, except maybe the planners who imposed a scheme on us that is worse for pedestrians who want to cross the road, cyclists and even much maligned car users.
