Loving the guilty look on the black wolf's face:  "well, I didn't do it"

They're Mobikes: a new hire scheme from China. Get the app, find a bike, ride to your destination then park it somewhere public. There are loads near Archway too. Was going to try it before the snow and ice dampened my enthusiasm. Shame some twonk decided to push them all over...

They have kick stands. The idea being you can park them anywhere once you have used it, so someone else can hire it.

I liked it

Sorry, only just got it! I liked it too.

These bike schemes are going to be a problem if people can just leave the bikes strewn around willy nilly. Some inconsiderate t*sser had abandoned an ofo bike (another scheme) across the pavement outside the school on Pemberton on Friday, ready for someone to trip over in the dark.

*ahem* parked cars?

Nasty cough you’ve got there John? You want to get yourself down the doctors before they close for Christmas.

Cars generally park on the road, or in designated spaces not across the pavement preventing people passing by. I had to pick this one up and move it over so I could walk up the path to reach my house. Not so much of a problem for me being a 6ft tall strong woman, but the little old man over the road with his Zimmer frame might struggle, or a mum and a pushchair, or someone relying on a walking stick.

I cycle myself sometimes, and I don’t own a car, so I’m not anti-bike so there’s no need for the obnoxious coughing. Consideration is required by everyone, and owning or using a bike doesn’t mean you get to be an entitled smart-arse. And i’d never just leave my bike laid across the street, nor one that I had borrowed or hired. It Is dark in that spot in front of the school by the railings, and me with good sight nearly tripped over it so a partially sighted person wouldn’t have stood a chance.

I think these schemes are a marvellous idea but just leaving the bikes strewn around irresponsibly is danderous and annoying for pavement users.

Unless they're on Wightman Road:

I agree that the dockless bike schemes will be a problem if users leave their bikes strewn willy nilly. Cyclists are not extended the same tolerance as motor vehicle users when it comes to bad behaviour.

It isn’t my van so I don’t know why you are quoting this back to me.

There are literally millions of examples you could give of inconsiderate public behaviour. Why cite cars or vans? It’s not a bike vs cars issue!

It's about the inconsiderate van driver (and the permitted pavement parking on Wightman Road blocking the pavement for pushchairs/wheelchairs), Lauren.

Not about you.

No it isn’t Gordon, this topic is about the scheme bikes left on the pavement. Why are people bringing cars and vans into it? If people want to moan about cars and vans they should start another thread. It’s not a bikes vs cars issue it’s a bikes issue.

I assume you've seen Wightman Road?

Cars tend to get away with a lot more in terms of parking, for starters there is millions upon millions of pounds of real estate given to car drivers to keep their personal possessions for a minimal cost. Just look at the number of on-road cycling spaces on the ladder (and the cost of them) compared to car spaces. If there was an equitable split it wouldn't be necessary to leave bikes on the pavement.
