Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Any recommendations as to where we can hire a car locally? Am a member of Zipcar but its fantastically expensive if you want one for more than a day, so interested in what others do when they need a car for a long weekend or week or so. Don't mind travelling a bit but localish obviously has advantages.

Have a look at Whipcar - not sure how it compares to other car hire but may be worth a look.

Yes, I was going to say the same thing.

I have part-way joined. I haven't used them yet, but a friend has and he's also been with Streetcar/ZipCar/Avis and he thinks Whipcar are good.

The bloke he hired a car from told my friend that he hired out his car often enough, that his own motoring came for free! It seems to make sense all round.

I do suspect how Whipcar compare with other car hire: cheaper, because you'd be hiring from local residents who bought a car primarily for their own use and not on which to earn a return, as ZipCar has.

We've used Practical - just next to the Shell garage on Park Road for over 10 years. Possibly not the cheapest but we've found them really great to deal with and we hire a car at least 4 or 5 times a year. They don't rip you off if you scratch the car either, you'll get charged but you won't lose your whole deposit. Carla manages the office - tell her I sent you if you use them!

Enterprise will deliver and collect (within rough offce hours, sadly not 24 hour) and cost pretty much the same price as any of the big firms, certainly no more expensive. We always use them these days for the convenience.

I also recommend the central London branches of Avis, Hertz etc over the more local ones as they are easier to get to and often have longer opening hours or 24 hour drop off.

We use Enterprise all the time. They could not be more helpful, efficient and user friendly. By that I mean that if you fill up with petrol and don't use it they remember and reward you next time you hire. They are American owned and I can not recomend them more highly.

From our Facebook page:

Diane Sewell Car3000 very good . Call them for a better deal

I assume by Car3000 they mean Carhire 3000 which is a broker for the main hire car companies (Avis, Hertz, etc) rather than independent companies.

I tend to use them when hiring cars for work and find them good but never used them in the UK.

Thanks everyone, this is really helpful. On this occasion, I think we will get the train - a quick look at different options suggests the car hire alone will cost double the train tickets, and that's before you factor in the petrol!

But really good to know about the different options.
