Covered in them in Clapton!

Yes, they've just arrived north end of the Ladder (only a few atm)

The little critters emerged in my kitchen this afternoon (they climb cavity walls - Blutack to fill cracks temporarily helps...). Opened all the windows - gone now.

I think it's just a genuine biological phenomenon that has been given a name! From observation I'd guess that this is a phrase that most people spontaneously coined as children, but the internet has made it a popular meme.

It always happens in July. It's early this year as I remember as a kid it was often on my sister's birthday (23rd). I can't pretend to fully understand the science behind it but to do with the ant mating cycle I think!?

I read that it was a combination of pheromone signals in the nest and particular atmospheric conditions that makes then all emerge at roughly the same time. Got a gobful on the way up Warham coming back from Yasser Halim at about 6:30.

I noticed tonnes of them emerging from holes in the pavement this evening. I'd never come across this phenomenon before, but a fascinating article about it at wikipedia (pity the poor males and their exploding genitalia though) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuptial_flight

Nope. And nothing to do with our fellow poster     ant     .

Are they ants or some other insect? Have always wondered about this. Saw loads rising from the towpaths along Lea River this evening but haven't spotted many around the Ladder...

Lord help us. If there are flying Ants (and I've noticed the little buggers over the last few days), can the flying Decs be far behind?

If you want to help science understand this phenomenon, please take part in the Flying Ant Day Survey: https://www.societyofbiology.org/get-involved/biologyweek/flying-an...

Done. Fascinating. It rained after the ants emerged but was dry before; might the promise of rain be a factor in when the ants arrive?

I think they are sensitive to atmospheric conditions so that might well be the combination of things that sets off the activity -hot and humid followed by rain.
